i HATE Barbas
I literally feel like killing him the entire time. Dat face makes my blood boil.

You cant tell him to wait; the only option is to have him walk away; he barks every 3 seconds, he pushes against you all the time so you can never talk to someone without being shoved around; he constantly blocks doorways and barks some more; and gameplaywise he is unkillable which makes him not desirable as a companion because all sense of realism is removed, and last but not least his quest takes you from one end of Skyrim to the other oh and you cannot do the quest without him.

SCREW YOU TOO BETHESDA.

I remember how i was feeling the same in my first Skyrim playthrough, long ago.

In my most recent game, i was on the way to the quest, then finally decided to move to somewhere else. Completely forgot about him, but the Smith gave my reward as i got the dialogue option like : "the dog caused me more trouble than satisfaction"

The dog must be waiting somewhere. I know he's back when i will feel a misity thing pushing my back just in the middle.

no one forced you to the quest, you did it because you chose to, i recently did that quest on a new char just for exp and such, and some times along the path you can tell him to stop following there was one option i got to do that but didnt, altho his barking can get annoying turn the sound down then and if he's not there at the end because of some glitch you can always use the console coomand to finish it, so yes you can get the quest either way, and if your've traveled enough you might be able to fast travel to either place as well to save time traveling ....
and at that remark about him being unkillable, Im think thats just fine, That makes him a Great companion while the quest is still active, you can take him with you on other quests then finish his quest later ....

I don't care if Barbas is immortal. He's bloody annoying with all the pushing, the barking and the low damage attacks that he does. I just told him to quit following me

don't forget you get to kill him at the end of the quest.

you cant even kill him there he just stills re joins his master. You just cant kill lords outside their home. If you really want barbas dead then visit home and kill him there as their soul must leave their home amd they cant reform outside their home.

Meta wise? Barbas is easily the best tank because of his low profile and the fact that he is invincible. Not essential where HP can go low, Barbas is literally immune to damage.

In-universe? Barbas is a aspect of the Daedric Prince of Wishes and he really wants to be reunited with Clavy. Of course he's rushing you to finish his quest.

You forgot to mention he blocks you into corners so you can't move, pushing you off cliffs is fun too. Oh, and the fact that he periodically and randomly vanishes into thin air.

So such fun to be had. No wonder people are tempted to finish him off with the axe.

Barbas is one part of one mission, not one companion. And others then he push you from cliffs etc.
The same is whith Meko, or Vigilante.
I have been pushed by Lydia from one cliff. It is one issue whith the game.

you got a better result if u dont kill him at the end of the quest, poor dog !!!

Barbas is my go-to follower and I have used him exclusively for the past 4-5 playthroughs. Not many followers can stare a revered dragon or a giant in the face and live. He also levels to a very healthy 45. If you don't stand still, he can't push you. You can use the push to an advantage in places like Labyrinthian where a door usually closes quickly behind you, locking your typical follower out. If Barbas pushes you through the door, guess who's then with you when a skeletal dragon and hordes of skeletons attack? When he corners you, use the sprint function, that usually moves him, or hit him with your weapon. He is also one of the few followers that puts up with friendly fire, making him GREAT for mages. Horseback also helps and he's one of the few followers that can actually keep up. He also tends to have better what I call "homing instinct". He doesn't get lost nearly as much as other followers. He will always find you. Fast travel resets him very well if you are separated from him. I own several dogs, so his bark doesn't bother me. He has been less pushy in my recent games. Could be one of these mods...

Requiem
Amazing Follower tweaks

Hands down, IMO, THE best follower in the game. He and my Requiem high elf make one heck of a team.

But I certainly understand that other players get frustrated. He is not for everyone.

I never obtained Barbas on my first 5 playthroughs or so, and only encountered him one time and then he went off to Haemar's Shame to wait for me, and I got sidetracked doing a ton of other requests... so I've only had the pleasure of his company one time.

But, I miss him now that his quest is over. He never once pushed me or got in my way. His bark never got on my nerves...at least it was just a bark. Some followers ramble the same one or two lines ad nauseum so a generic bark was a nice change from the usual drivel. I have 3 dogs, a talky cat, and 3 kids and a wife in RL. I'm used to a lot of background "conversation", so Barbas has got nothing on the real-world. :-P

He's not that bad really, and even my character already being at super-human level, he was a great help during the few quests he accompanied me on and was quite effective at what he did, getting in the faces of some pretty tough enemies and harrying them for me while I had time to plan my attacks. I like Barbas.
