Own Skyrim + all DLC. Will my savegames transfer to the Special Edition?
Hi everyone. I got through the anti-human-contact-support wall at Steam to finally get to Bethesda about this simple question: Will earlier Skyrim saves still work and/or will they be updated after October the 28th?

Bethesda's support peon's answer:
'As far as I know, your saves should be compatible as it's a remastered version of the game and should change the save system too much, however, I cannot guarantee it as I am on the customer support of things and don't know too much about how the developers are piecing it together.'

So now I'm back at Steam: How will such an update affect (if so) existing Skyrim savegames in the cloud?

I get the feeling it's best to await the 28th but now I'm hyped and want to play now! :)

Um, fifty existing threads about Skyrim remastered/special edition.

Does nobody use the search function??

But to reiterate what everyone has been saying in those threads, it's a seperate game, not an update. You might be able to transfer your saves, but definately not if they use mods, since mods will essentially have to be recreated. But it won't affect existing saves.
You are absolutely correct, I might have mistaken the on topic search with the overall community search... Thanks for your reply.

Ok, sorry about being terse, not feeling very well.
I apologise for my shortness.

No one really knows, but the very very strong suspicion is "no". If they've changed the scripting engine at all, it won't work.
Well if it's actually going to be a seperate installment (I'm assuming it will completely replace the latest version) I'm not taking any risks. I will wait, I think you're right that it's too uncertain...

It's a separate item on Steam. There's already a store page.

It won't replace your current version, you'll end up with two separate installs of the game.
From research, I have found old skyrim mods will (somehow) still be compatible with new skyrim. So i think this means it looks pretty hopeful for old characters to be compatible. (I was extremely worried about mods being incompatible but hey! Bethesda finds a way some how.)

I suggest you do some more research, because you came to the wrong conclusion.
ok. I found multiple articles containing tweets confirming mods are compatible.....

Then you're minsunderstanding what they're saying, because that's wrong.

What do you mean? The articles are even titled that the ORIGINAL MODS and ORIGINAL save files will be compatible with special edition!

Mods will need to be converted through the creation kit, which means you'll need to wait for the mod creator to do so and re-upload. Many mods rely on SKSE, which will not be available for at least a few weeks at best guess. Word is SkyUI's creator isn't interested in bringing it to SE, so mods that rely on MCM may be unusable. Any saves that had mods incorporated will definitely not work, and any that don't are iffy at best.
mmmmmk.......
