At a crossroad, could use an assist
I own Skyrim Elder Scrolls V with the Hearthfire DLC (nothing more). I think I'm running out of missions and the game has put me at a decision point. Missions remaining are 1) Join imperial legion 2) Join Stormcloaks and 3) Join Companions.

Which route offers the best and loger lasting missions?

Imperial or Stormcloaks are exactly the same either side of the civil war ! There is No difference between them choose which ever side your drawn towards.

My recommendation is The companions as it's Not part of the civil war and they give you followers you can choose from when all their quests are done! You will need to become a werewolf during their quests which takes some time to get into but fun none the less!

There will still be loads of quests out there, Believe me however thorough you think you've been there are still lots of quests to do!

A warewolf? Interesting. Is there a cure if I don't care for it?

yes Wrangler, there is cure for werewolf condition. but you have to do a couple of quests for the compaions after your affilicted. also, the sweet part when you reach the cure quest your not forced to be cured by its end.

And if you want some new lands to explore but don't want to buy the 2 other DLC's, check out Wyrmstooth, Falskaar and Helgen Reborn. The first can be found on SteamWorkshop, the 2 others are only on Nexus. But they all give you a lot more to do and the first 2 are adding more "land" to the game.

You really need to buy yourself the Legendary Edition of Skyrim, so much more to do... just saying

As Noppius advised you you could ignore the Civil war if you wish visit nexus for mods and you can play Skyrim for the next 10 years just in new lands , quests and adventures!

But to do that visit GophersVids for modding assistance to get started on using how to use mods safely and check load order!
Lots of fun ...if you do it carefully !

^^ Great advice by Eternie!
Gopher is the one that learned me how to mod Skyrim and made my game so much better. Really, if you are new to modding, go check out his vid's and be a happy modder!
Eternie Aug 29, 2014 @ 6:40pm check out ones to Nexus Mod manager, SKSE, Loot, TES5edit just to be able to manage your mods . Then working out how good your computer is depends on how far you can go whether you can increase Enbs , graphics , gameplay, player homes , castles, new lands etc But get used to checking load order after each new mod and only introduce a couple at once brfore checking their order and where they need to be in the order.
If your really smart and can understand lots then there would be MO (mod organiser ) as an alternative to NMM (Nexus Mod manager) Which supposedly does a better job but has a steep learning curve. When your starting if you can manage try it, if it all makes sense go with it but don't use both!
Good luck

Gopher is also covering MO at this point. He has a good tutorial running for how to use MO, how to deal with certain problems and switching from NMM to MO. But NMM is a very good basic tool for a first time modder.

1 litte advice. Once you have your "base" game up and running the way you want it, make a copy of your data folder, your Skyrim.ini and your SkyrimPrefs.ini (you can find them in Documents/My games/Skyrim if you use Win 7).
Put that copy on a save place (extern HD or a second HD in your PC) so if you screw up your game, you can simply delete and replace with your clean and working backup.
I learned this the hard way, having to redownload the game and installing everything again after a few "bad" executed mods. Just saying.
