How many plugins can skyrim handle?
I heard 255 mods but I don't even know how many mods I have but I got 161 plugins should I stop downloading more mods or does that mean I can go up to 255 plugins?

and alot of my mods don't have ESP's because they only modify meshes/textures.

Go up to 256 plugins and tell us what happen.

No It's ok I'd rather not break my game. :P I'll wait for someone who has already went up to 256 plugins to reply lol

Keep downloading.
For this is Skyrim: Prepare to Crash Edition.

Oh you have a different Skyrim than me. Mine is Skyrim: Fully Modded and Stable Edition. :P

You can't break your game like that, all you would have to do is uninstall it and it would be back to normal. I, however, only have 100 something mods.

Yeah yeah I know I was actually just too lazy. I'm not actually gonna go download 96 mods to find out what happens. It'd make more sense to be told by someone who's experienced it. Lol

...
96 spaces for mods.
For an average player, a lifetime.
For us, just a fraction of what must be done to cap out in your modding skill.

Lol if I spend any more time on the nexus I'll have those 96 spaces filled by tomorrow, which is why I created this thread. :P

Yeah Pretty sure the mod limit is 235, I have around 225 running atm because depending on what is at the bottom of the load order it may exceed that and cause a crash. I recommend staying around 230 mods installed.

Well mods is not the same as plugins I mean 1 mod can have several plugins ... for instance skyre 1 mod however fully installed it contains several plugins (races, combat, standing stones, main, etc).

Yeah I know. I use SkyRe and most of my mods have several plugins. That's why in my original post I stated I had 161 plugins but was unsure how many mods I have because a lot of my mods either don't have esp's or had several.

The limitation of active mods came from former ES games.
The number 256 is due the first two bytes of the FormID, used as ModIndex.
The FormID (Hexadecimal like 0xFFFFFFFF) is a type of 8 hex digit reference number,
used for every object in the game, in order to distinguish each object from every other object.
One part of the FormID, the first two bytes ( 0x(FF)FFFFFF ), are used for the ModIndex,
which gurantees that every Mod is able to add its own items/objects.
Each .esp file has its own ModIndex.
(.esp stands for elder scrolls plugin which is considered a Mod(ification) )

This limit was one of the reasons for the Tool Wyre Bash and the bashed patch.
The bashed patch could merge plugins ( aka mods aka .esp files) into just ONE,
in order to reduce the number of ModIndexes used.
As result more than 256 mods could be used in a game,
whilst the ModIndex always has to be lower or equal to 256.

Rawwrr.
