Ever since I got Volsung, I love it. High armor rating, 20 extra inventory space, free waterbreathing AND batrer discount? I cant take it off!!!!! :)

I think they all suck without mods.

are you kidding? I have poured over 200 hours into the game and have yet to find a non-quest reward mask that has a better armor rating.

Of course, I need to mention that I am a master smith and always upgrade all helms I find to maximum value

They do suck without mods :P

With blacksmithing and enchanting you can craft much better helms.
Warrior characters can craft way better helms. Dragon Priest masks don't count as part of any set. You lose an Armor Bonus.

They could be good on mages. The problem is they all have armor rating. So they mess up the Mage armor perk.

I use mods that let the ones that aren't based on armor rating down to 0, and also allow them to be equipped along with criclets and/or hoods. It makes them go from niche-useless to something you actually seek out.
Morokei, because I always plays as an altmer mage
Either Krosis or Otar. I think Otar would be better for my character.
Nahkriin, because the bonuses are incredible for a Dunmer Vampire Battle-Mage.

Then clearly you don't know how to use them.

As a mage i'd recommend either Morokei or Vokun
Many of then actually have three enchantments (and they aren't weak ones), which isn't possible for the player to craft, so they can be perfectly useful as endgame gear, although not the ultimate in min-maxing.

I'm most fond of Nahkriin; it suits a spellsword type character perfectly.

Technically not true. Fiery soul trap + extra effect enchantment perk gives you three effects on a weapon.

I use them. For thieves and assassins I use Krosis for the whole "no one can see me cause I wear a mask" affect. The enchantments are great for those builds too. The light armor is substantial. For Heavies, I usually use the one that gives frost, fire, and shock, I think Otar is it? But I have used Raghot too, the stamina one. For mages, it's either Morokei or Vokun. For battle mages, Nahkarin. I've used the Dragonborn masks too. They have nifty little enchantments, especially for battle mages.

Oh, well thanks for letting me know!

They screw up armor set bonuses though, so it's always an armor loss if you are using decent gear and have those talents.

The masks may have three enchants, but you can apply much stronger enchants with crafting.

And you can technically reach max armour rating (beyond which there is no benefit) through crafting, and without the matching set bonuses. Thing is, any particular priest mask is a lot faster to get (ergo more likely within the realm of time most players will spend with a particular character, or with the game at all) than 100 smithing & enchanting, and for the relatively meagre time and effort invested in their acquisition the masks are very powerful.
