Universe Sandbox 3 - Screenshots of variable Earth ocean levels - February 2013
Here's an early look at a new feature Georg and Naomi have been working on over the last few weeks.

There's still lots to do to make this behave as one might expect, but this work merges the ability to use existing textures with Georg's earlier work on procedural planets with variable ocean levels.

Universe Sandbox 3 is a full rewrite of the original Universe Sandbox with tons of new features and improvements. We expect to release Universe Sandbox 3 as a new game for both Windows and Mac in 2013 .

Why's nobody replying? Anyway, looks absolutely GREAT. Can't wait for the release, as those oceans look amazing.

Not sure Robin, but I don't think a lot of us care about how pretty you make it, just that it gets made. I don't think most long-term users of Universe Sandbox are playing with one or two objects in which you'd be focus or zoomed in so close to see the textures or realistic look. I do rcall the black hole looking cool as hell late last yr on the other forum, but again, so long as it functions and properly.

I turn everything off like dust trails etc for max fps (better accuracy in the sim) and I cram hundreds if not thousand(ish) objects in my systems. How they look as a small faint dot with a little glow is irrelevant to me.

They do look good, but I mean, I don't think I'd ever really notice it. And it's kind of a bummer that so long [weeks] seem to be spent on textures when the actual game is more important. I hope it, like most things, doesn't turn all candy and little substance. Hate to jump the shark as I've been supporting Universe Sandbox for well over a year but.... how things look are the least of the issues in my opinion.

Not trying to knock the work, just, it's really not important to some of us.

Seems to of cut some of my stuff off. Real functional roche limit, blackholes, asteriod belts , etc is much more important than how real earth or mars look is what I added on the bottom. I am just anxious to see US3 -- but not for the visuals.

I'd like to see them make 2.2 work. Setting the time step to 30 days makes mercury fly off into deep space by 2022 :P

This is because a time step that high is not accurate enough to simulate a body with an orbit of 88 days.

Universe Sandbox 3 will have an adaptive time step feature that will internally sub-divide a 30 day step for objects (like Mercury) that need more precision.

That's a relief.

I love what I'm seing so far. Will people that own the current version be upgraded, or will we have to buy it again?
Dan Dixon  [developer] Apr 19, 2013 @ 2:40pm
The new version will be a new product. Here's the full explaination:

Ok, no big deal, just wondering. Like what I'm seeing for the new version so far.....

Wasn't it the Mercury astronauts who coined the saying, "No bucks, no Buck Rogers?" Maybe it was just Tom Wolfe. In any case, no eye candy, no Buck Rogers either. Although astronaut Rogers was originally a fictional character in print, his name was Anthony. He never became Buck Rogers until illustrator Richard* Calkins was hired to draw the strip. That's when Buck Rogers gained his popularity.

My point being: yes, simulation accuracy is important, but don't belittle the art crew. I've poked around with US with the intent of having it help with setting up some art projects, and it's okay for now but it ought to be even better for v3, in part thanks to the graphical upgrade.

*(The artist's name was ♥♥♥♥ - rhymes with Nick, but STEAM won't let me use that word. I don't know if anybody called him by the long form of that name - Richard)

Eye candy is awesome, the more the better. But what I really want to know is when are we gonna see a Mac version? I've seen this so many times featured around and about online, but the fact that it's Windows only has been a massive cocktease & cockblock all at the same time :D I know I could run it in Boot Camp or Parallels or whatever, but that would incur extra expense when I don't really need Windows at the mo.

That looks amazing, Are you also going to change how impacts look too? I would like it to be more satisfying when I send a Gas Giant colliding with the earth and such

The new version will be a simultaneous Windows and Mac launch. We'll be releasing it when it's ready and it's not ready yet.

We've spent many hours talking about this very problem. So... yes.
