is the combat any good in this game?

its personal opinion, but combat runs along the same line as other space RTS's although as a nice change you can add modifiers to the wepons to add range or damage ect (and wep size), so esientaly you can build a mixed fleet of short ranged armored "tanks" and snipers to help take care of the larger ships, and anything in between to combat what the enemy is using

In short: yes, it works really well. You will have to play to see if you like it (and if memory serves, the demo is still free, and little changed between that and the game proper, hehe).
