The short of it is, is that this is a great game with interesting mechanics. Dungeon crawling is fun although repetitive, working the market is entertaining, and the character interactions are good enough. Overall fun game. However where this game really FAILS is in its tutorial system and the hidden mechanics of the game.
The way the tutorial system is set up is that it makes it seem like adventuring is an important part of the game. Meeting new adventurers and getting their cards is the way to make the best money because in theory you get a bunch of items for free that you can then turn and sell for a great profit. That however is horribly wrong.
After failing to make a payment you literally have to start the whole game over again. I love playing games in hardcore modes with permadeath, but I hate it when those characters die to things what I feel like are outside of my control. In Recettear you "die" when you miss a payment. While its not the games fault I missed the payment I do think it is the game's fault that it didn't properly explain to me how to play the game.
What the game doesn't explain well is that the most important thing in the game is your merchant level AND the hidden level for each of the potential clients. In the tutorial they push you to sell things to as close to 130% the base value of the object. What they don't tell you is that each of the characters have levels. As they level up they get access to more funds which lets you in turn make much more money off of them in the long run. They level up MUCH more quickly when you sell them things at what they "think" is the best price. What they think is much different than what the tutorial teaches. Instead of trying to sell things at close to 130% you should really be selling them at around 105%. When you do this the NPCs literally level up over 10 times quicker. And your merchant level raises much, much faster as well.
As a comparison my first time playing the game I barely made the second to last payment and failed to make the last payment. I had cleared completely 3 dungeons and my merchant level was at a whopping level 9. Recently I just finished a speed run where I NEVER went adventuring once, I only bought and sold things from customers adn the stores. by the end of day 23(Out of 36), I had enough gold to beat the game in entirety and still had an extra 200,000 pix(gold) left over. My merchant level was in the 20s and it took a little under 3 hours to do.
Overall the game is great and I would recommend it to anyone. However I would also recommend doing a couple minutes reading online(Searching Youtube for speed runs is probably the most informative, the fastest I've seen online was beating the game in 51 minutes.) about how to really play the game. You can of course do the dungeons and play around with all of the other fun mechanics of the game, but just know thats not how you beat the game.
