Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Please help. Question about keyboard/mouse controls...
I can't make selections with the mouse, but the arrow keys work on the game menu. How do I "enter"/select options? I've tried using the return/enter key. Nothing happens. My spacebar doesn't work either so I'm stuck. Escape exits the game. Tab doesn't work. Is there something wrong with the demo? Thanks in advance. :-)

Yeah I sort of had that experience too initially. You don't use the mouse at all in Recettear, it's all on the keyboard. Z is the enter/select button and X is the cancel/go-back button. In dungeons Z is attack, X is special attack, and C selects your special skill. W brings up the menu in game. You can also change the control setup by right-clicking Recettear in your game library, and selecting "Launch Configuration Tool". Also I'll warn you that Recettear does not for whatever reason work in the full screen mode; it'll crash if you select the full screen option so stick to windowed mode. If you still are having issues or If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you so much for the helpful information! I wanted to get the game while it's on sale, but since I can't play in full screen, I might pass or wait until it's much cheaper. I've never played a game without mouse control. Oh, well. :-)

Yeah it is one of two games I've played that don't use a mouse, the other being Chantelise which is made by the same company. Took some serious getting used to, and so did playing in windowed mode. I picked them up on a sale awhile back figuring I could kill a little time with them, but I never expected Recettear to be so addicting. I'd say give the demo a try and see what you think. It probably won't be cheaper any time soon since it is pretty old...the original Japanese release was in 2007, and then it was released for everyone else in 2010. Anywho, glad I could help!

I've decided to give the demo a try anyway based on your comments. It really looks like a fun game and I like the graphics. Thanks again. I'll probably post again when I finish.

Cool, I'm curious to see what you'll think. I know I was really skeptical originally, but I ended up playing it more than a lot of PS3 games I paid much more for.

I played the full demo. It's a fun little game, and I still have the dungeons to look forward to. At first, I didn't realize the shops had other items to buy because I didn't scroll left and right through the menu. No wonder I couldn't make enough money to make the first payment. Hahaha! How embarrassing! I reloaded a save and bought more expensive items. It was no problem after I started getting accustomed to the keyboard controls and buying/selling a variety of goods. I can't resist a good trading game. It's a buy for me. I really appreciate your help.

I play in full screen and it has never crashed on me so idk o.o. and id recommend rebinding the controls to something more comfortable.

if you have a mouse that has software to remap the buttons (logitech, Razer and the like) then you can create a separate profile for Recettear.
You certainly don't need to - can play with just keyboard - but i just find attacking with left mouse click much more natural since most other games have that
(but for a great little doujin game, i'm certainly not complaining)

(PS. full screen was fine for me)

Full screen works fine for me, but screws up the aspect ratio, so I stick to windowed.
SanguineTear 2013 年 7 月 22 日 上午 10:19
Well what the heck, most people I've talked to before had the same crash issue...well like fohfuu said though it would not look too good stretched out like that. Anyway, I'm glad to hear you like it, I'm happy I could help!

I have an old Logitech mouse, but the manual is missing and I can't read the model number on the bottom. The game would be much easier to play if I could use it instead of the keyboard. The arrow keys are tiny on my laptop. I often hit the wrong key. If my fingernails are long, it's even worse. I remapped the controls in the configuration tool. Why can't I use enter and tab instead of a letter or number key? Argh! I play at night without a backlit keyboard. Frustrating, to say the least.

The game fills my screen except for the Windows toolbar and taskbar. How do I adjust that? It's distracting.

Thanks a million! :-)

Good news, figured out how you can get your Logitech mouse to work if it is not a programmable gaming mouse. Honestly it is a bit of a hassle, but it might be worth it if you really hate the current control setup. Oh and for the taskbar: try setting it to autohide, maybe that would work?

Anywho, there are two programs you'll need: Setpoint and uberOptions. Setpoint is a program made by Logitech which lets you customize your mouse and accessories a bit more in terms of function, and uberOptions is a mod for Setpoint which lets you assign pretty much any function to any button. So basically you can make your mouse buttons act as the Z and X buttons and be able to use your mouse. I just tried it out playing Recettear and it was really nice compared to just using the keyboard.

*Warning, long post alert!*

If you want to try this then first you'll need to download and install Setpoint from here:
http://www.logitech.com/en-us/support/3131?osid=14&bit=64

Click on the downloads tab, make sure you have the right Operating System selected, then download and install it. Once it is installed, run it.

Setpoint alone won't work though, as it does not let you assign functions to the left and right mouse buttons, so that's why you'll need uberOptions. I am going to give you some specific instructions on how to install this one to save you a bit of undue hassle.

*EDIT*
I just realized I neglected to take your operating system into consideration for the directions. I am using Windows 7, so if you have something different let me know and I can give you the correct pathways you'll need for a few steps.
*

First, you'll need to download the uberOptions installer which you can get from here: http://uberoptions.wdfiles.com/local--files/start/uberInstall_4.80.5.exe

If you're interested, the homepage is: uberoptions.net

Once you've downloaded it start the installer. Your computer will probably ask if you want to run it, so click yes if it does. The next box which pops up will say "Click Yes to close Setup, or No to continue anyway." towards the bottom. Click "No", then click "next" then click "I agree".

When it asks to you pick a folder, copy and paste this into the box:
C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPointP\

Click next. Now copy and paste this into the box:
C:\ProgramData\Logishrd\SetPointP\Devices\

Click next. VERY IMPORTANT: Make sure the checkbox which is next to the text "Editable B1 & B2" is checked; that lets you assign different controls to the mouse buttons. There are no more settings that need to be messed with now, so just click your way through the rest of the boxes and you are done! You will get a message about a file, but you don't need to worry about it.

Now click start, and go to the "Mouse and Keyboard Settings" icon, and there you are! So if for example you want to change the left click on your mouse to act like the z button, click on Mouse: 1. Left Click in the select button box, then to the right in the select task field, click "Keys: Keystroke Assignment". Now a heads up, as soon as you do this the left click on your mouse will not work as a "left click" anymore, so you'll have to use the built in mouse thing on your laptop from here on in. Now where it says "Specify Keystroke" type z and there you go, the left click is now your action button. Unfortunately you can't set the mouse up to act like this only when you start Recettear, so you will have to change your mouse setup every time, but it isn't hard to do since you will only be making a few changes, and to change them back you can just click the "Restore Defaults" button. Also, you might want to assign the left click function to something else on your mouse like clicking in the scrollbar, so you dont have to use the built in mouse-thing while navigating around. You can do that by selecting mouse 3: middle button in the select button box, then under select task click other, click select function, then find Mouse: 1. Left Click in the list, select it, and click OK.

So yeah, it is kind of a lot to do for one game, but like I said it might be worth it to you if you hate the keyboard style.

As always, don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions!

Wow! Thanks for taking the time to help. I'll check out the links and let you know if it works for me. I appreciate all that you've done. :-)
SanguineTear 2013 年 7 月 23 日 下午 9:46
No problem, glad I could be useful. Hopefully this will help you enjoy the game a bit more!
BloomingLilac 2013 年 7 月 23 日 下午 11:02
It worked! I'm enjoying it, too. Thanks again. My scroll wheel won't reset to default. That's the only issue I had. I can get it working, but it scrolls up when I want to scroll down and vice versa. I'll get used to it, though, if I can't change it. This mouse is old. I have a wireless mouse that started acting up so now I'm stuck with this one.
