Does this game work with a controller?
I have one of those Logitech controllers that has the buttons numbred from 1 to 8.
It's not the best, but will it work on this game?

I tried the demo with a dual action controller from logitech, it works perfectly. Try the demo to test your pad.

Aye, works great even with my cheapo $19 generic PC controller.

Xbox 360 pad here.

Works like a champ. Don't forget to use "custom.exe" to setup your controller first (yes, Tear will even remind you to do it :P)

Yes and no.

The game works with a game controller that natively supports DirectX (i.e., the old DirectInput API), but not XInput (Xbox 360 API, the new standard that replaces the old DirectInput standard). Before 2006, PC games used the old DirectInput API standard Then in 2006, Microsoft released Xbox 360 and the new XInput API for the console, and intended Windows to also adopt the new standard. However, the transition process for Windows has been slow and gradual. Some games from as late as last year (e.g., BioShock Infinite in 2013) still used the old DirectInput. Recettear used the old DirectInput (DirectX) API for game controller - it specifically says so in its HTML manual.

That means the new Xbox 360 controller (which natively supports XInput but not DirectInput) would not work with this game. Some controllers have native supports for both DirectInput and XInput. For example: the Logitech F310 has a physical switch on the back between "D" (DirectInput) and "X" (XInput). F310 has native support for both.

If you have a later-generation controller (like the official Xbox 360 controller) that supports XInput but not DirectInput, then you need some sort of software to override the control. I used the Pinnacle Game Profiler to map/override XInput with DirectInput, so I could use a Xbox 360 controller with the game.
