Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale

Is there a point to do the boss rushes?
Yes, I am very behind in the game, since I think it is better to star the level from the start if you want items and you get more levels for your character for doing that.
The reason why I ask is if you need to complete boss rushes to get the next area.
Thank you in advance!

Bosses have their specific loot drops so there is definitely a point to it.

But can't you do the same thing by doing the whole level?

I guess time is the only good thing about boss rushes.
So you don't need to complete the boss rushes to get to the next map?

No, they're optional. The dungeons are all unlocked by story events.

You do, however, rather quickly get to a point in the postgame where most regular enemy drops become completely obsolete and you need tons of boss drops to do rank 2-4 fusions, so one can be forgiven for skipping the dungeon and getting right to the good stuff. For instance, the Rank 4 staff takes five crystals that can only be found from the dark knight bosses, and the Rank 5 robe takes 15 more. Most aren't too bad, but some are pretty obnoxious and you really don't want to go through five floors of worthless crap just for one chance at a rare drop. By the time it's relevant, you have enough brute force to melt bosses pretty fast.

When you hit the bonus dungeon, the bosses in the boss rush drop special items that can't be found outside it, mostly ingredients for the final rank of fusions. Basically, the Rank 5 fusions all involve upgrading a Rank 4 with a "dark" version of that item, and most of them drop in the bonus dungeon boss rush. Also it ends in three chests with a chance at the rarest loot in the game.

In case you didn't realize, Character bosses are only fought once, and cannot be reencountered on normal dungeon delving again. You will need Boss Rush on that dungeon or Crystal Nightmare to fight them again.

Do they drop rare items too?
Of course.

For example, a Boss Rush on the Amber Garden, Tielle only drops Sweet, the book Sweet Sweets and the Superarm Band. In the Crystal Nightmare version, she drops Ace Bow or even the unique Succubus Bow, which is required in either lvl4 or lvl5 Fusion.

The character bosses usually drop a weapon of their class, which can be used or fusioned for the ultimate Rank 5 Fusion weapons.
