You don't need a specific character to get specific items. It's random what you find in the dungeons.

The items you get dropped from monsters should not be affected by the character you choose to play.

On my first impression, I thought Caillou was the worst character, and it was extremely annoying how slow he is, but by endgame he becomes arguably the best.

I still don't like him as a character though,

Every character has their flaws and such... one of Caillou's flaws being low hp, but a few (dozen) medicines will change that with caillou, though he still has the drawback of sort of 'charging' his weapon, even if it's just to attempt to quickly hit an adjacent enemy, unlike Louie who will do a swipe immediately when you attack. But with some enemies I am very grateful for that explosion spell (bees mostly, occasionally rabbits, and heck, sometimes even slimes and I think he calls them gnolls).

I'd say go for everybody's true card before you decide on which character you like most. I thought I was going to hate Caillou the most as well, but after aiming for his true card, I realize he is (sort of) a good character if you can learn to use him well. After all, he restores mp with his normal attacks, so don't be afraid to use some of your spells.

I've used Caillou a bit and my usual practice (at least in low-level dungeons) is that certain enemies I designate as regular attack enemies and others are magic-only enemies. So I end up refilling my MP on easy-to-hit enemies like slimes and rabbits, while I am basically forced to use MP on hard-to-hit enemies like knights and bees.

well, so far Louie is my favorite, Cailou is a bit more hit and run (not my thing) Charme's range is too low, and what's his face is just liike charme but punches

I just want to make sure I get Caillou's true card this run. I got very lucky to get a Slime Liver dropped and so I want to make the most of it.

Once Caillou hits his 30's it's pretty easy to go an entire level on his SP bar. About the only allowance you need to make is staffing a couple slimes to death (or later, skeletons) for easy and relatively safe recharges. Once he can comfortably cast all day, he's the easiest character by far in almost every situation (Charme can deal with character bosses more easily, but that's about it).

But yeah, he doesn't start out with stats that compliment his play style.

Charme was my favorite adventurer from when she was unlocked until a while past the end of the game, and I actually liked her as a character too. I don't know how practical she would be in the boss rush though, I haven't tried a serious run with her, I may need to get some better equipment first.

Once I learned boss patterns, I found Caillou can pretty harmlessly take out virtually any boss in the game, with one big exception and a couple minor exceptions.
