Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition

FULL DX1 DESIGN DOC WITH ANNOTATIONS BY WARREN SPECTOR!
[Majestic Revolutions - Joe Martin.pdf DOWNLOAD LINK](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2_-knUokw90RzIwUEJsU2pYdWs/view?usp=sharing)

SO excited to share this with you, this is a document I've wanted to get my hands on for YEARS, and I just got in contact with the writer of an article on them, Joe Martin ([Venerate his name and obey him in all things!](https://youtu.be/sh115hKZxJ0?t=26m53s)), and he sent them to me! He was, as of the writing of the article, unable to fully share them, apparently this has changed.

Going through it is an absolute gold mine.

Tilson and the Ghoul are the best characters, the original endings are really fascinating(I love that if your too slow the ending changes!), and the game is so MASSIVE in scope, it outstanding to read. . I haven't even read it for 5 mins, shaking with excitement. I've only skimmed through these very briefly, haven't even had them for much more then 10 minutes. You'll all be going through them fresh with me.

If that wasn't enough he ALSO sent me Thief 4 (the *cancelled* modern day reboot! not the one we got!) design docs, and Ion storm Design documents!

[Thief 4 Submission Document - Joe Martin.doc DOWNLOAD LINK](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2_-knUokw90bGhZVkQxR1hYVHc/view?usp=sharing)

"The Thief series has always been held back by esoteric, unrecognizable fiction and passive,
slow-paced gameplay."
I wonder why this reboot didn't work out? /s

^This one inludes DX3 Info Not HR, the cancelled one before that!

Seriously, Joe is great.
Let's all take a moment to appreciate Joe.

Edit: [Quick preview](http://i.imgur.com/dAnCeVC.png) of my transcribed version, to ease reading of Spector's notes. As you can tell by that horrible red line I'm having mixed success, there will definitely have to be a few revisions.
It is being built with Pdf-xchange editor and being tested on adobe reader, so best read under those conditions.
This is my first time using the sticky annotation feature and I just get that feeling it acts a bit funky.
Any suggestions welcome!

Edit#2: I was asked about other documents so I thought I'd copy a comment i made from below up into here:
A great question!
There are 2 significant documents that are related to this one.

The first is the Deus Ex Continuity Bible, Here's a link : [The Deus Ex Continuity Bible LINK](http://www.nanoaugur.net/dx/bible/)

Compiled from design documents made during production, Note the plural here! It's quite likely, if not certain there were more design documents made then the 2 we currently have access to, those being the annotated one posted just now, and the other document I'm about to focus on.
Which is a *separate* design document.

"The DEUS EX Rules Amendments & Addenda"

Unlike the first document, which aimed for a Xmas 1998 release, this one aims for a spring 2000 release, features half the listed missions of the 1st design doc(Spector actually annotated the first down to 20 by hand as well!)and is just prior to release.
Here's a link [WARNING, direct download to .doc] : [The DEUS EX Rules Amendments & Addenda.doc DOWNLOAD LINK](tenchinohoukai.cavesofnarshe.com/Deus%20Ex%201312.doc)

Edit#3: [Originally the game was intended to be open world!](http://i.imgur.com/BU58ugA.png)
[And a 3rd person mode like TES series!](http://i.imgur.com/fnzsLGp.png)
Edit#4: In case anyone else is curious, no idea *whatsoever* why the post was removed from the front page of the sub. I've contacted the mods multiple times but no response.
Edit#5: Submission fixed, title updated to comply, also added new info to better explain.

While we're at it:

(((LINK REMOVED BECAUSE THAT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SITE ACTUALLY SPREADS MALWARE/VIRUSES! Didn't see the malicious links in Firefox, but when I happened to check with Chrome, I saw 4 additional buttons, just as attractive as the main one, all of them leading to a zipped EXE on a different site - tons of VirusTotal hits! Sorry if anyone actually clicked on those and ... umm ... started the EXE why would you even do that ...)))

  • The Deus Ex Continuity Bible
  • Deus Ex PC Game Script v1.1 (by Luke Kowalski, Anton Forsander)
  • The same thing again as a FreeMind document separated into nodes (by me)
  • Gamasutra's Postmortem of Ion Storm's Deus Ex

Thief 4 sounded like an awesome horror stealth title, but ABSOLUTELY not Thief at all. Gore? In a Thief game? Thief series were always scary ass games (not horror though, certainly) at times and extremely atmopsheric, but they were always lighthearted. Half of me wanted it, half of me is glad it never changed the series' reputation.

Your first link is [link removed] . Put a DOT in place of a . somewhere and it will show up.
I would love a copy of that script, thanks for that freemind document!

I'd have to agree!

Well, that's a story in itself, I've wanted to get my hands on these for years, having learned of their existence from Joe's original article, here : http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-04-the-deleted-scenes-of-deus-ex .

Which I had found after doing research after a TNM replay : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XHdEViG-D8 (fun fact! The "Ada" mentioned in the video, and once in the DX bible is actually a mistake it seems! It seem's that was a typo in the Deus Ex bible, as in this now released document there are multiple mention's of an "Adam" who fills the *exact* role.)

At the time of writing the article he was unable to share it freely.

I've looked obsessivley since then for any scraps of information on DX, including a design document, though I never expected to actually get a copy of the hand!! annotated one!

However after yet another TNM replay just a few days ago, I went on another research binge. and read the article again, and decided to search for his contact info. I never expected a reply, but I've been in an "archivial frenzy" emailing old modders and such for copys of their old files. And it was just sorta continuing that routine.

I managed to get a hold of him via twitter and asked if he was still unable to share. Apprently the situation had changed, and he was!

and that's it!

TLDR: Writer wasn't able to share/situation changed/was able to share.

Hey all - Joe here. Glad you all enjoyed the design docs and hope you'll share them far and wide.

If you're interested, I've written a few articles about this stuff in the past and interviewed Harvey Smith and a few others.

I wrote these a while ago now, so they may be old hat, but obviously means the world to me when people share them. You can find stuff I've done about other cancelled games or deleted scenes (No One Lives Forever, Outcast, Half-Life 2) at www.joemartinwords.com

It's worth mentioning that Warren Spector put a bunch of documents like this into storage at the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas. It's where I got this stuff from, after chatting to Warren once. There's plenty left there which I haven't explored.

This is Joe!
Joe's the man!
You should read Joe's stuff!
Thanks again Joe!
I've done a re-compilation of most of the files mentioned in this post (incl. the stuff I commented):

(((ORIGINAL LINK REMOVED BECAUSE THAT ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ SITE ACTUALLY SPREADS MALWARE/VIRUSES! Didn't see the malicious links in Firefox, but when I happened to check with Chrome, I saw 4 additional buttons, just as attractive as the main one, all of them leading to a zipped EXE on a different site - tons of VirusTotal hits! https://www.sendspace.com/file/jio690

25.6 MB (26,892,174 bytes)

I used the opportunity to switch out one document for a version where the first page is removed because it contained an old address of residence of Joe Martin.

In case you seriously still don't have 7z (Really?), get it here: http://www.7-zip.org/

Hint: Unpack close to root level of your drive, because the path lengths are very long.

The file is this big, because I also saved a (cropped) webpage screenshot of some of the articles because some content seemed to be online-dependent. Also, I included the doc file OP linked (Apparently the proper full design document of DX1.) as original and as PDF for easier viewing.

OP, your links don't work. This isn't Reddit where you do [link text](actual link), you have to do it like this:
