Fix for the "creeping shadows" bug!
This bug occurs on later NVidia drivers (not sure about AMD). Someone made a fix on the Eidos forums but the fix doesn't work for the Steam version. Instead, I just downloaded a No-CD Patched version of the JustCause.exe, and then used the shadow fix, and it worked.

Originally I had a link to a rar on MediaFire including various other fixes, but some users have noticed (including myself) that their anti-virus programs detect it as a virus. This is most likely a false positive but I understand that people don't want to take that risk. Thus I have just uploaded my version of the .exe and an instructions file inside that:

You MUST copy and paste this link to a browser. For some reason if you just click it it asks for a decryption key. If you just copy and paste the link, it works fine. I'm assuming it's to do with how Steam links certain sites.

[dead link, RIP zippy share :(] http://www34.zippyshare.com/v/14041858/file.html

Simply go to your Just Cause Steam directory, which is:
C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Just Cause (32-bit users)
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Just Cause (64-bit users)
by default. Replace the existing JustCause.exe with the one in the download.
You can also right click the game, go properties and browse local files. Which wasn't an option when I posted this topic nearly a decade ago!

I've scanned it with Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes and they both found nothing. Hope this helps!

Both Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes say that justcausefixes.rar carries a virus.

That's odd. I use MSE and it didn't pick up this. It is most likely a false positive, however. I can confirm that my computer has no adverse affects since installing the patch this way. MediaFire also scans their files routinely to avoid potential liability, as do many other file-hosting sites. Quite often game cracks are detected as malware when in fact they are not. I'm not sure about the other files in the justcausesfix.rar other than the Shadowfix. I can confirm that the Shadowfix is not a virus as it has been around for ages, on an official Eidos Forums thread (which is still up, just the link for the actual file is 404'd). I'm guessing the resolution changer or the save files are the culprit here, but like I said, I didn't use them. I'll download the justcausefixes.rar again and scan it, and see if it comes up as malware again, and get back to you. If it does turn out to be malware, I'm extremely sorry but that was in no way my intent here.

UPDATE: I have scanned the .rar 4 times and it has said clean 4 times. Scan completed on 8 items, no threats were detected on your PC during this scan. Is your version of MSE up to date? I update my version pretty much every day. It might have something to do with older definitions being installed, thus determining that the file is malware. I have also scanned all the individual .rars within and none of them contain malware according to MSE.

I updated MSE, scanned JC.Shadow.Fix.exe and HackTool:Win32/Keygen was found as a Medium Alert. It probably is a false positive but I'd be interested to see if anyone else has this problem or if it is just me.

Ah yes, going through my MSE History I have an allowed Medium threat by the same description. I have MSE enable Low and Medium threats to run because most of the time if not all the time they're not dangerous. And HackTool:Win32/Keygen is a generic term for any crack I've noticed.

I enabled Low and Medium threats to run in the first place because MSE would automatically remove or quarantine them despite being legitimate programs (just not digitally signed or recognised by MSE) and not even tell me other than a green pop-up saying "your computer is safe". I'd go to where I'd downloaded the patch and nothing would be there, and redownload it 50 times or so before realising MSE was quarantining it.

I can pretty much guarantee that it will not have any adverse affects. I doubt that both the Eidos Forums and MediaFire would host a file with potential malware.

Hey PurpleOwnz, did this fix ever work for you? Any problems?

Thanks for the upload. The new file passes both Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes.

It really works, this should be pinned, it makes JC1 ten times better when the shadow bug isn´t there

The reason why it's detected as a virus is because it's not well-known and not a famously downloaded.

Unfortunately this didn't work for me. This game is unplayable like this. Guess I'll just start with the second one. Glad to see it worked for some.

It worked for me and the file is clean according to Avira.

Thanks a bunch OP, this makes the game actually playable for me!
