Background: Purchased as part of a bundle from Bundle Stars. I played the first two games in the series to death back when they came out.
Impressions: The game stands up today much as it did when it came out. It's a damn fine strategy game that's a blast to play and highly rewarding. However unlike it's predecessor this game is more of an expansion pack, with only 8 missions they instead ramped the difficulty to near frustrating levels.
While still fun and rewarding for the most part I really started to detest the 'mansion kidnap', 'rail yard' and final mission for the sheer bloody minded difficulty of sections those missions where trail and error started to get irritating.
There are some missteps for sure with elements that are seemingly only solvable in a single method and theres one right in the first mission that can leave you stranded just as you thought you were done and you have to go back a few saves or even start again.
Fixes: As with Behind enemy lines there are a number of serious issues with the game on a modern PC that make it almost unplayable.
See the page on the 'Commandos Wikia' for 'Commandos: Beyond the call of Duty Fixes' for a collection of bug fixes to stabilise the game and make it playable.
The Good: *A classic formula that stands up today for it's simplicity and functions. *Missions can be tackled many ways. *The settings have a historical context and introduced as such. *Missions are huge and diverse. *Fast save/load system makes experimentation less frustrating than you'd think. *Huge sense of triumph from executing a plan that takes out even a single awkward guard. *Looks pretty good considering it's age. *New mechanics, some of which are interesting and alter your tactics.
The Bad: *Installs ok on Steam but multi-core affinity issues requires some manual tweaking. *Many missions have sections where there is only one practical solution. *The difficulty level is a massive leap up upward over the original game. *A new character only appears in a single mission. *Cigarette packs effectively give everyone a Decoy box, messing with the balance. *Shorter tougher campaign.
Recommended for: War, Action and isometric strategy fans and fans of the original.
Conclusion. 7/10. Once the stability issue is fixed it's a reasonable follow up to the original.
It is always hard to follow up such a great game as Commandos : Behind Enemy Line was. But some how they have done it and very well indeed. This follow up has reached such high standards as the first one did, if not higher. This is great. It just carries on the first one with manely just a lot more missions on it but also a few extra wicked features and ways to pley the game which are all worth it. Havent you always wanted to be able to capture an enemy soldier who's friend has just opened fire at you? Well now you can! You can move the soldier to where ever you want with in a certain range and they will not fire at you, which is such a great touch to the game and makes it much like a real life situation. An extra from the injection, you can you some ethanol and kill then that way. It just adds to the variety of different ways to do it. One of the funniest parts of the game is to be able to hide and then throw rocks at the enemy and see them look round at you to see nothing. Another great touch that is added to this is the cigarette box. You either get given one a the start or you can take it from a dead body. It is just used like a decoy. YOu just lay it down to attract them and then creep up from the behind and they have no idea. Its i funny in a way that they have no idea what you are doing. The locations are as good as the ones that you are put in when in the first one. They are that good. There is not really much else i can say but it is all in my review about the first one. Lets just hope that Commandos 2 will live up to these two and i think that it will!
Played for seven hours, completed the first mission... Just like how I remember it! This is one of those games you stumble across as a kid, play for an entire day and can't figure out why you can't complete the first mission. Cause' kids are dumb! or there are some flaws with the game that a kid can't figure out... which makes the kid dumb anyway! Then why the hell did I still spent seven hours on one mission? Probably cause' I'm still dumb! or I'm still a kid!
I was kind of skeptic before I decided to get into this game again, mainly cause' I worried it wouldn't work well in the modern computers, however the devs actually revamped it for new machines!
The best way I can describe this game is this: Remember the japanese sequel to Super Mario Bros. which became known for its steeply increased level of difficulty? Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty is exactly that sequel to Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines.
Not suitable for newer OS. I have win7, and the game keeps jamming, I couldnt get any help from the forums. I do not recommend for newer systems. I love the game though, its challenging, but the fact it doesnt work on my pc drives me crazy.

I can confirm that the game is running nicely on WINDOWS 8.1 x64 without any tweaking or adjustments whatsoever. Multiplayer over LAN works as intented too, you just need to run the server app located in the game directory. All in all , an excellent classic game whose life got extended with the modern systems patch. Thanks devs :)

I have Windows 7 and it's work perfectly, sorry for the people who don't, but i don't detect any bugs, or any problems with the game, i can only commend this game to people who have windows 7 ultimate, i don't know if it works in any other version or OS. Now with halloween discount it is at 0,79 really cheap for a great game. Enjoy!
