I'm probably only giving this game a thumbs up because I got it dirt cheap on Humble Bundle. If I would have payed more than $5.99 for it, the positives about this game would not outshine the negatives.
At the end of the day it really isnt "a bad game" so I decided to give it a thumbs up.
1) Cell shading; is a plague on mankind. I understand The Darkness is based off a comic, I used to read it as a kid, along with Witchblade. Albiet he looked ten times more badass in the comic, the cartoon filter over everthing does not make me feel like Im in the comic, it makes me think like I'm slaughtering all the characters in toon town. It takes away the sense of realism, and just makes all the over the top gore seem less visceral. The original game did not have quite as much gore, but it was ten times more real and satisfying without cell shading. Maybe its ok to have in a game like Dragon Ball Z or Narruto because you're trying to make it look just like the show, but keep it out of FPS. Just because people like Borderlands doesn't mean it will work everytime. Personally I hate Borderlands, (but Im sure the game takes longer than 6 hours to beat). I suppose its also a way to avoid bad press if the game is way too violent and the cartoon look dampens the violence factor, but I dont think thats the case, and that imo is wimping out.
2) Some abilities ruin the immersion of the game, there is one where anything you throw will explode on impact, and it doesnt really explode but it juts poofs into purple gas and completely disappears, including bodies, no bits, no metal shards, just purple gas.. and gone. Its not even a proper explosion and looks really cheaply done. I only got that ability to get the armor ability to see if it would look anything like how it did in the comic. the Darkness armor ability is pretty cool , but forcing you to have the stupid explode on impact perk is really annoying and not worth it. There are few other poorly thought out abilities , but that one is by far the worst.
3) Guns are pretty generic, not many different models like they had in the first game. Instead they have abilities to power up guns with the darkness to make your bullets more powerful, thats all well and dandy, but I think they focused too much on those cartoonish abilities and not on actually giving you a good variety of weapons. Everytime you pick up a colt .45 its the same filigry inlayed 45 as the ones you start with. Like every goon in the game has Jackies signature custom .45's, like they are part of his fan club, its lazy.
4) The games too short, which is why if I spent more than $5 I would have felt ripped off.
as far as the PROS go there really arent that many other than its delightfully gorey, fluid enough gameplay and I only ran into one bug on the brothel level where you're in a vent, if you have a decent graphics card and have vsync turned off, you get stuck. Doesn't make any sense, but turn ON vsync for that part and you can pass, then turn that crap off. The story is pretty good but some of the characters get annoying like that guy in the beginning trailer of the game, I liked him at first but he gradually became more annoying as the game went on, his character was a little too overwhelming. I really liked seeing some old faces from the first game though, especially the Butcher.
So in conclusion, I would recommend this game as long as you get it on a serious sale, and avoid some of the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ abilities.
