Documentation? Allies? What's going on?

I'm totally loving the visual/audio style of the experience, and shooting enemies is totally fun, but looking at the scores to the left, it seems like there's a whole "saving allies" thing I should be doing. And meeting ghosts and flowers, I think?
I think the allies are the manta-ray-looking things– shooting them gets me red/bad "allies shot" points. But how to save them?
Does anyone have any idea what... that is? Or how to do it? Or if there's documentation on this crazy game anywhere?
Because I'm really digging it, but feel like there's a lot more to explore.

Just shoot an enemy while it is eating one of ray looking things. Explained in the text in level 0.
