As a fan of XCOM over many years I found this game to be frustrating and overall not worth the play time, despite picking it up for next to nothing as part of a bundle. Story is not terrible but has plenty of holes but the protagonist is not particularly likeable. Specifically, even if you attempt to choose the more tactful conversation points he still comes across as a ♥♥♥♥♥♥. However that can be glossed over as part a superficial play through if what you really want to do is shoot aliens. Gameplay has its moments (and is decent in later stages) but there are a couple of points that ruined the experience for me.
Firstly the difficulty curve spikes after the first mission and leads to frustrating re-loads - worse for me because I initially chose team members that are particularly bad at low level (Commando & Engineer) which in combination with the shocking AI (can't kill without you giving them specific targets, can't keep their heads down and will pop up at just the wrong moment to get slaughtered) almost led me to quit. However once you overcome this, it is a relative cake walk and re-loads at the end game were rare and caused predominately by bugs.
Secondly there is no base management, engineering, R&D etc. Finding new gear in the field opens it up for everyone instantly. The base itself becomes a trudge of walking the same corridors to talk to the same characters with an occasional unlock of a misison but it rarely affects the game progression.
My main beef however is the inability to save the game! Fair enough that you can't save mid battle to prevent quicksave-quickload spamming. However when there are at times 20+ minutes running around the base without the ability to save your progress. This is madness and there is no excuse for this.
So I recommend don't buy it, but if you have already then don't play it unless you somehow have no other unplayed games in your steam library.
