As a noob...
What's the best thing to do? Random matches or what?

And is it always best to play 'ranked online' ? Slightly confusing. There seems to be two seperate onlines and an offline and only ranked works with achievements. 0_0

Ignore Open it's pointless... You want to play on Ranked then choose a Character to play and just jump into the starter map on Easy or Normal and learn how the game works.
Try to use a builder and don't bother with Jester/Barb (If you have DLCs) and leave EV till after you learn abit more of the game.

If you learn about boosting don't take it till you get your own character to lvl 74 and have learned the game otherwise your most likly not going to know what to do, if you were to then join a game you will prob be kicked for not knowing what to do.

That all seems like sound advice. Is open pretty much redundant then?

I got this game in the humble bundle with 'all the DLCs' and only just getting round to play.

To complete the campaign, can that be done online or is it the seperate 'offline play' option? Thanks!

Well my answer would be.
Just play the game to have fun, Ignore ranking and acheivements as the former is for min/maxers and the latter you will get anyway in the normal progression of playing.
*award for reaching level 10, 20, 30, etc.
*award for killing a boss you have to kill anyway.
stuff like that.
And if possible, play it with a freind you know rather than a random stranger on the internet.

That's cool, everyone seems nice so far. I was wondering.. how do I upgrade items, weapons?

Expect to be kicked for no reason and without explanation whatever you do.

Check out the game descriptions and ask what kind of characters the host wants you to use.

I did meet some nice guys who helped me to get Animuses by grinding Summit on Insane; I also tried to join a game that said "medium level" and it was all 85+ levels who just started NMHC Assault without warning...

For items and stuff:
Play the first map on easy/medium and go to tavern, the taverkeeper has restocked all items you didn't lock with cheapest stuff he has. This is the way to get cheap low level pets. Don't upgrade pets, they get Exp when you do, just check out if they've leveled.

Play later maps and challenges on Hard/Insane and you'll find more expensive stuff for sale, but most of it is crap, just grab drops from maps. But sometimes you might get lucky so check out what's for sale.

Do not bother upgrading until you're higher level and can use decent equipment, you'll be getting better ones anyway. Raising a stat by one point on crappy item or a Godly weapon cost the same per level and gets more expensive each level, so upgrading weak stuff is a waste of mana. You need to be lvl 45 to use Legendary gear and you rarely find anything less that's worth upgrading. Actually you usually don't need to upgrade anything until you play InHC or the harder challenges and then you'll be getting Godly drops.

Grab enough drops and you'll always find some gear that's better than you had. Don't mind minuses on stats that character does not use much and try to get a matched set for a bonus. The bonus doesn't help unless the stat is 10+ to begin with, however.

When you want to upgrade something, go to Tavernkeep or Forge, select the item and open item info. Use Pro Mode(click on the box) and click on the stat you want to upgrade.

You need lots and lots of mana, that's why it's best not to bother until later.

Always grab accessories(white mask on the map) but don't trust green/grey marks, always check yourself if found gear is better than what you have.

Lock gear you want to keep, drop items you like but don't use around your tavern(lock pickups if you're going to invite strangers) and press Sell All to get rid of the rest.

Basically, talk to the tavern keeper in your tavern and go into your Hero Info tab. There, you will find all your equiped items. (If the item you want to upgrade isnt equiped, go into your Item Box and you can find it there) Click on what you want to upgrade. Toward the bottom will be an Invest button, Invest All button and Pro Mode. Hold onto the Invest button to invest mana into the upgrade. Click on Invest All to get a full upgrade. Check off Pro Mode to quickly upgrade. After all that, just click on the stat you want to upgrade.

It is a bit complicated.
On ranked, you can not use custom maps or mods. On the other hand, all your ranked data (characters, items, mana, achivements, highscores) can be exported to 'Open' any time you want and as often as you want.
Word of warning: exporting will completely overwrite (replace) ALL your 'Open' data. But export is useful to try out repecs and expensive upgrading, without wasting your ranked mana on it - or worse yet, upgrading a item in a way that you regret.

Open, in addition to allowing custom maps, also stores your data (characters and everything else) locally on your own computer, so as you can imagine that usually means meeting a lot of cheaters. With ranked it is stored on a server online.

Your second question, about campaign completion.
This is also a bit complicated and requires some explanation.
You have basically 2 seperate profiles and what you do on one does not show up on the other.
One is the ranked, stored on their server, this is the one that steam uses to list your achivements.
The other is stored locally. That is the one that is used when you are using 'Open' and 'local'.
Nothing is shared between those profiles, though you can export from ranked to open/local, turning your open/local into a copy of your ranked profile.

And to answer the ineviteable question: no, there is no option to copy in the other direction, from open/local to ranked.

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll be sure to follow it.

The question I have now is.. what is the best way to compare stats of items in item box with equipped items? That seems a little bit confusing.
yamakami Jul 5, 2013 @ 3:05pm
The game shows green thumb up on some items to show it would be better than what you have now, but it often assumes you'd prefer to use a +1 item that can be upgraded to +10 over the +2 that can be upgraded to +9.

It automatically shows stats that are better in green and worse ones red, but I prefer looking at what stats are relevant to the character I'm equiping and adding them together. Item with +20 on single stat may or may not be more useful than item with +5 on four stats, it depends on how it helps your playstyle. For example, massive minuses on tower stats are fine for a DPS Huntress while a tower build like a Summoner can do well without any points in Hero HP&Damage and resistances.

Remember that if you put on 4 pieces of same type(leather/mail/plate/pristine) you get a small bonus on all positive stats, so gear with huge bonus on a single stat may be more useful even if it has minuses.

But these things really should be in the manual, so now I'm wondering where can I find one? I tried to Google it and only found DD wiki and some fan-written walktrough guides. Trendy homepage and Steam got nothing, WTH?

Hey im a fellow player but im not new. I say the Ranked version is better for you if you dislike cheaters or players who use exp and item giving maps on Open or local. But if you are looking for gameplay for ♥♥♥♥♥ and giggles i think Open or local is more fun as of Ranked is a bit more serious work. Thank and this is only my advice. It's genuine, Thx bye!
yamakami Jul 6, 2013 @ 6:51am
That's right.

Also, open your ranked game, click on 'export to open'(will delete any pevious saves on open/local!!) and then go to local game and you can try how upgrading stuff works without losing all your mana on ranked if you picked wrong. Then you can copy the plan on ranked.

There are also mods that give you huge amounts of man and already maxed items and pets, you should try how you do on insane/nightmare and the harder challenges with the supposedly overpowerd gear. I can tell you that several minimum level suggestions are way too low and maxed out myth gear is not enough.

You should just played on Ranked, then when you think you have seen it all, play Open and download some modded maps in the Workshop.
People who say Open is pointless don't play games for fun, because that's what Open is: A lot of fun.
