I just got all the dlc for free, but haven't played in ages. I forgot everything, even how to chat. I need some help too :c
you have two options go get high in this game, use a builder this means good gear for : monk, (use ensnare, the lightning aura and the strenght reduce aura). Huntress, (you will need alot of here proxi mines, poinsen gas and inferno traps.) Magician ( Fireball tower, sometimes the littel magic missile tower) and series E.V ( you need her barricade , reflekt beam and the tower buff beam and the summoner ( you will need the archers, spiders and magigians for your defense.)
Or you do what the most ppl do: play a dps huntress , barbarian. The game is full of them but you will need a goob builder and they a rare.
Maybe some guys give you the advice to build a suire then a magician but .. dont do this. Pericing vs Splash dmg, splash dmg wins and fireball towers coast less.
maybe you got friends in this game? play with them its easier at the first time and dont try insane until you got 1000 tower stats on each, its wy frustrating to loose in this game ^^
oh my, oh my...

If you need some help with this game, I'd be glad to help / assist you and teach you the finer things. I am by no means great at this game, and just got it @ a month or two ago, so I am not that far progression wise. I love having new friends to play the game with =)

However, from my experience.

1) always play hardcore, it grants 50% more exp and better loot at the cost of, if you die. You are dead until the next build phase.

2) I started with an apprentice, their fireball towers are really good, as mentioned above, however they have one major drawback. Some monsters have a fire immunity, making these towers useless against those monsters, unless you use a) a monk's strength drain aura b) a huntress' darkness trap or c) use a magic barricade to remove the elemental resistance, which isn't always an option or the most effective use of your DU (defensive units). **Note** The monk / apprentice is actually a recent setup if you play with a friend or have a controller for split screen. Monk Auras can be quite powerful.

3) a squire is actually far more effective, their harpoons are extremely powerful, but not until late in the game. Coupled with the Series Ev Tower Buff Beam, you can see these things fire off like a machine gun that does damage in the 6 digits and higher, they can be quite powerful.

4) you don't need 1000 tower stats on each to win in insane, its not nearly that hard. However, I really found you can power through different levels and find yourself kinda bored with the easier ones, so be careful with your progression, it can ruin your experience.
I have a 1000+ stats and that was enough to get me through most of all the campaign nightmare HC, So that would be severe overkill in insane
don't power level you will miss the best part of the game easy-insane
nm is a train wreck when it comes to progression and gear

Thanks for all the elaborative reponses, guys. And I don't plan to power level.
Honestly, the game is pretty easy to blindly play and understand. After a certain point, it becomes very slow to know where to get new gear really fast if you don't have that advice, but the basic gameplay is easy to pick up. Maps that give you rewards for beating them are often good ways to get new good items fast. Also, getting to late waves in survival is how you get most of your good gear later on in the game. But honestly, just play, have fun, experiment, find people to play with, and do lots of maps that reward you with stuff for beating the map or challenge.
