Looking for advice

[Elegant Metal]

Me and my girlfriend are starting to play this game. I originally thought that it was a simple TD game where the skill points don't really matter and we could play any character we wanted.... Turns out it isn't that easy. She'll be away this summer so we want to go as far as we can. I don't really want us to get stuck because we have no idea how to level. Also, Im wondering which 2 characters we should be. We're just starting out so any advice is greatly apreciated!
