Ironman Challenge Run
Goals: Take a fresh character and finish all campaigns, then challenges on Nightmare. Eventually reach 100. No help from anybody outside the Ironman team. No powerleveling, no twink items.

Rules:
1. You must start on Hard difficulty and may never use Medium or Easy.
2. Hardcore must be on at all times.
3. You start with no gear and mana. Create a new folder for items, and convert all current mana into tokens before you begin. You may only use the items you find.
4. You may only use one hero.

There may be additional tweaks but I feel these simple rules capture the essence of an Ironman run. If anyone with a decent amount of available time to play wants to join me, feel free to post below. If there is a lot of interest I will start a Steam Group. I am fairly new at this game but I'd prefer to play it as a challenge rather than a powerleveling AFKathon.

I also don't think this is ALL that difficult (compared to Ironman'ing other games), but its still something I'm interested in. I've done a few dry runs over the past few days and its not too bad. And yes, I know there is an achievement named Iron Man. This is not related.

I started my Tower Adept. She has finished all of Hard Mode (Deeper Wells -> Glitter) on Hardcore by herself, and I am working on Insane tonight. Tried to jump into Nightmare Deeper Wells last night, got down to 2 ogres left...I'm pretty close to being able to finish it, (I probably could do it in current gear with more practice), but I need to figure out where I can farm some easy Mythical armor to replace the Godly pieces I am still using to boost tower damage and attack slightly. Currently Lv75.

Tower stats are 168/267/174/221.

Any comments or tips appreciated!

very interesting, may try this but with a jester to make it extra tricky lol.

back when i had just my mage, i started up endless spires on nightmare and completed only wave 1 there are chances for low end mythicals to spawn from the chests after wave 1. mistmire wave 1 is also a common places to farm your first myths. check out videos on youtube for a strategy

going from hard to insane is not to difficult, but its from insane to nightmare that will be very tricky especially with just one char. the traditional way to get better gear would be to complete insane survival on a map (suggestted maps would be throne rooms, ramparts, endless spires and if you can glitter.) a few times, nearing the end waves (~ wave 20+) there are chances of mythical gear dropping

try out raining goblins on nightmare this can award you with a good wep for the mage. as for strategy try surrounding the crystal with magic missles.

Everything I've read says that the Endless Spires method was patched? But I'll give that and Mistymire a shot. I wasn't able to finish Raining Goblins but I did get a low end Mythical out of it that I'm currently upgrading.

Currently a third through the Insane campaign, and it has so far been a snooooozefest :(

if your talking about goblin copter patch then, that is a no issue as i was farming endless spires with goblin copters in it

insane was challenging before the increase in level cap and ultra mega super loot. at your stats you would have been near end game when the game first released lol. lol, crazy how the game has changed.

Endless Spires worked nicely. After a bit of farming my stats are are now

286/541/364/422

I've cleared all the Campaigns on Insane+Hardcore now and I'm a couple of campaigns into Nightmare now :)

And btw this is on Ranked!

edit: and I'm Lv76!

Lv78 now 315/557/364/422

Nightmare Deeper Wells and Foundries and Forges were both simple. The copter in Magus Quarters surprised me, will have to change plan to deal with that extra Ogre.
Nightmare Ogre Crush was real easy to solo. Too bad I don't have someone who can use the weapon!

I've been farming the first two waves (occasionally the third wave) of Endless Spires trying to get a better set, and I've currently got my resistances up to 47/37/39/54. Wondering if I need to get a better pet (using an Apprentice Guardian atm)... Also I see people with accessory items that have stats but so far I have nothing other than the 4 basic slots, the pet, and the weapon.

Nightmare Raining Goblins is still not doable, I can get pretty far into the 8th wave but eventually succumb to the big orcs.

yo, saw you had trouble with raining goblins so i decided to try it out myself, indeed it was very hard. but i managed to do it in the end. note i did try and copy your stats but they are not entirely the same. instead of equipping a weapon i decided to use a darkbot to help me fight the orcs and so i did no attacking.

also my resistences where not up to scratch so i had to do this without hardcore ok (oddly enough i didn't die once). my build relied heavily on healing so i would suggest ahving good casting rate, or to use your adepts auto upgrade ability wisely. i had to use my appentices overcharge ability a few times on the final wave. but all other waves went smoothly.

the build
note the build starting from right hand side is 2 fireballs facing the crystal, 3 magic blockades, 2 lighting towers and a fireball tower facing the crystal, 3 more magic blockades and 2 fireball towers facing the crystal.

one important thing about this build is there are no gaps for orcs and goblins to slip through!!

my stats

used a darbot for dpsing, as i did not have a weapon suitable for the challenge. stay in the inside and run around the crystal, pay close attention to the 4 fireball towers at the back as mobs can get stuck there (since only 1 fireball tower is attacking them they can clog)

repair!!

needs alot of attention due to the apprentices naturally low hp towers

I'm not going to bother trying your strat because you're using a 5.5k dmg pet...if i save up 200mil there is a 452 atk pet i can get from the shop...so I'm WAY far from legitimately getting such a high damage pet...

edit: you also have way more hero stats than I currently do (more HP). I know I must repair/upgrade towers. The problem is the big orcs cleave me when I try to repair and I die eventually.

sort of wish you would give it a go. tried to simulate both you and a pet dpsing togeather. ne ways i have revised the build and have gotten to the end again (i found the lightning towers taking damage at the front so i moved them to the sides), one hit from orcs would pretty much kill me with the hp and resists i had.

the trick is to hug the crystal or even stand on top of it and repair constantly in a circle this way no orc can hit you, one wrong move and it will all be over. mages walls i found to be able to hold themselves so they are only upgraded to 2 chevrons, fireballs and lightnings should be upgraded to at least 3 chevrons. no overcharge was needed.

the weapon and pet i got from insane summit so you they are perfectly legit. although i had them upgraded to max so it may take time for you to do that. although i wouldn't expect you to be trying with unupped gear.

the revised build

stats 1

stats 2

was not sure of your hero health, however do note my resists are significantly worse than yours and i will die or be near death if hit. also note that wave 1 you may need to place a temp magic missle to deal with fire immune mobs.

My pet is an Apprentice Guardian so it does 0 damage. I'm also tower build adept, so my auto attack does very little damage. I've been waiting for good pets to buy from the shop, but they cost 200 million mana...
Sir Cheddington Apr 4, 2013 @ 11:38am
it will help to get yourself an animus for this mission, even if it means sacrificing a few tower points. you dont need the high attack power produced from your gardian you need extra sources of dps (your tower atack is plenty good). hence the animus. (get this from insane summit no need to buy)

the staff was used to send mobs back away from the barriers. and was not used as a dps source per se. so your tower staff should be just fine so long as it has knockback. the rest of the time was spent upgrading and repairing. if you do not have knockback that just means you have to pay extra attention to towers and their hp.

note i didn't do this in one go, i did fail once or twice, just gotta be lucky and hope you dont die on the final wave.

it may prove beneficial to hybrid out your apept for particular situations, also if you are planning to complete the shards maps as well the sky city boss cannot be attacked with towers.

@Cheddington I changed your layout, leveled up my Animus pet and was able to do NM Raining Goblins with some luck.

It has been over a week since I posted this run and since then I have received absolutely no contacts from other people about joining me on this run. The rest of Nightmare just does not seem feasible to complete solo as there is no gear progression path for me to take with just one hero. So this is the last message I will post to see if there are any other people interested in joining me on this Ironman.
