Where are Dungeon Defenders servers hosted from?
When I start a normal online game, click custom and "host", where is the server actually hosted?

Are Dungeon Defenders servers hosted from the players own computers or from server belonging to Trendy Entertainment?

Are you sure?

How is that possible? I mean, when I want to host a server for some other game I usually have to configure my modem to accept incoming connections from other computers. How can you host a server for Dungeon Defenders without doing this? How does that work?

Therefor the modem has to be capable of UPNP[en.wikipedia.org] and it has to be active. The game will configure the modem automatically. Without that, nobody can join your game.

I didn't understand your question. If I understood, my answer is: The people can create their servers by pressing "host game" (if you are on ranked), but are you enter at open or ranked?
(I prefer ranked)

I believe open you are the server because its the same as local and on ranked you are on trendys servers

When you host your pc becomes the host, but trendy keeps an active server index which is what you see when you browse for servers.

How is that possible? I mean, when I want to host a server for some other game I usually have to configure my modem to accept incoming connections from other computers.

This game uses the UT3 engine and this engine uses a listen and dedicated server model. For this game the listen model is used so when the game has internet or lan access it will listen on the actve port which it keeps open with updated open packets for connection requests and allow them.

When the listen server shuts down the update packets stops and it closes the port again.
