Super new player! Which character should I go for?
I noticed most of the other people online seem to be playing summoners, so clearly some characters are more viable than others. Any advice?

The reason people play Summoners is because they use a different unit(Minion Units instead of Defense Units), so you can have more defenses, and equipment drops are also based on which classes you are; Summoners technically wield no weapons, so all drops become armor unless another class is in the map, and generally the best class weapons are map rewards, not map drops.

Try each character you have and see how it goes. Experiment a little; you definitely don't need the 'best' or most efficient characters in your first run, and new ones can easily be grinded up once you progress in the game. So play what you like until the game requires you to have multiple builders and a damage dealer; you really only need to start seriously worrying about that on Insane or Nightmare difficulties, so just do your first playthrough on Hard, level your characters as you please and use what you enjoy. If you have trouble, online may help.

Although in general, I'd say that Monks, Summoners, EV's(Although they don't need good stats) and Huntresses are the most used builders, and that Monks and Barbarians make the most efficient damage dealers(Although I personally use a Ranger). It is worth noting that female characters have a higher max speed, but lower health, than male characters, and the inverse is true, so if possible have your builders be female and your damage dealers male(Unless you feel like the additional speed makes up for the lost health).

Squire is a great beginner character as well (probably the most OP solo builder before summoner) Harpoons don't have to worry about magic resistance like mage towers and monk auras/huntress traps are not something i would suggest for a solo builder (these are massive support if you swap out to build the auras/traps BUT not something i recommend for a first character)

Apprentice is a good starter character as well but make sure to be aware of elemental resists and clump different element towers together or you might as well just delete him.

I have to recommend the Apprentice, his first towers is already an offensive one and has the most versatille towers, although he's easy to learn it takes a lot to master his towers that most people just don't understand how awesome they are. When you level up, create a monk, then a EV, then the rest is up to you.
