most maps only the host has to own for others to play on but the shard maps and associated challenges\maps require all players to own them to play together also if you do not own the shard maps you can not play nightmare difficulty on your own and this is where you will be playing most of the time in the end
At the very least, I recommend buying the Dungeon Defenders Lost Eternia Shards Complete entry on the store page but with how close the base game + price for that comes, you're better off just getting the complete pack.
Altogether, the Quest for Lost Eternia Shards sums up to be what's essentially an expansion pack for the game adding new levels, monsters, items, bosses, Nightmare mode, along with a grand finale level to top it all off.
I personally consider the Series EV and Summoner classes as must-buys as well. Series EV has really useful towers (mainly the reflector, physical wall and most importantly tower buff beams) and is fun to play, and the Summoner essentially doubles your tower cap since his minions cost Minion Units instead of Defense Units. A tip, instead of building walls, build walls made out of Summoned Archers. The New Heroes DLC is also good because the female counterparts run faster than their male counterparts, making them better building characters.
Barbarian can be ignored unless you like that kind of playstyle because, endgame wise, a monk will outdamage a barbarian and has useful skills that the Barb doesn't (mainly, Tower Boost.) Jester is fun but with how unpredictable the nature of the character is, she can ultimately be skipped as well.
The mission packs (City on the Cliffs, Talay Mining Complex, Tinker's Lab) are worth it but I don't consider them as must-buys. Hope that helps.
