What should I aim for to prepare for NMHC runs/farming?
I haven't played in a long time but what stopped me before was not having an idea on how to get my foot into NMHC. the only guide i remember at that time basically said to one specific map at like wave 15, clearing it, checking chests, and getting lucky.

Is it still the same? Also is the tinker's workshop DLC worth it?

Short: farm surv for mana and buy equipment
Long: farm surv for gear

Does the survival map matter?

Throne Room is a easy way to farm Mana.
Kings Game/Aquanos for Gear
(sometimes Ultimate Stuff starts droping at wave 14 Kings Game)

I started with mage quarters surv and now I'm at ramparts. Going to start experimenting on glitterhelm soon. It depends on your characters and your gear what you can allready do. You'll just have to experiment I'm afraid. Tons of myth gear will start dropping after wave20 but they're very low stats.
An alternative people do is if you have just enough stats is to go to endless spires NMHC and survive the first wave. Then they loot the myth gear from chests and start over. Personally I hate to play like that and I hope that wasn't the design they expected people to enjoy.

For DLC I strongly advice summoner and EV. They are completely OP and you shoot yourself in the foot not using them in your builds. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ move from Trendy.

If you want to play solo you'll also need more stats than people suggest. You'll miss out on a lot of mana and spend time running around on larger levels trying to upgrade your towers. On insane setting it's also very hard to sometimes even just pick up the chests before the first wave starts, let alone place your build down.
I tried MP and it's not very fun. Maybe it's just how it is now and it used to be better when the game was fresh. It's mostly hosts who go AFK and expect you to be their slave.

It's extremely annoying to find the progression path in the game so I understand your frustration. Some maps have an adviced level rating but most don't and there's never an indication which difficulty you should try. It takes tons of time feeling with your hands in the dark and it's just wasted time that takes enjoyment away.
Most guides aren't any help either. There are old guides that are broken because game mechanics changed from patches. And there are current guides who every freaking time talk about 'beginner progress' but their definition of beginner means you have 2000stats or something crazy. For them 2000stats is nothing because they can start an alt and have it there in a few hours. There's also youtube videos where nobody ever shows their characters stats to see if you can go try that map and difficulty.

OP is asking how to enter NM difficulty. He's not going to farm ultimate gear in the near future.
You also don't say which difficulty to play those maps and don't give any indication around which stats he should aim before trying those maps.

You are not forced to buy them to beat the original game and the shard maps on Nightmare. As you said both heroes will make the game easier, Series more than Summoner but nothing else.

Wrong, solo play requires usually less stats because often you are forced to carry others.

I've had most fun playing the game public until everyone thought you would need stats of 8k to beat a map.

I experience exactly the opposite. Clients who are joining to be AFK.

The progression in this game is exemplary. You just have to play the game like it is intended to play. If you rush through the game to the latest maps on the hardest difficulty then indeed it is frustrating. Play the game on Medium, then on Hard or Insane, go do survivals on Insane (probably with Hardcore mode) and prepare yourself for Nightmare difficulty. The gap isn't that huge as people claim, yes I also have played recently, no changes has been performed by Trendy.

You are reading the wrong guides, guides which are not meant for you yet. All guides at the forums are working fine, also older ones with small changes.

How about trial and error? To be honest, looking at guides is the last resort for anyone who is struggling with a certain part of a game.

Lots of quotes don't take it offensive.

@OP
To get into NM, play the game on Insane first, do survivals on Insane (optional HC) on Kings Game and Shard maps. At least shard maps are possible with less than 1k stats.

Alternative take a look at following guides
- http://forums.dungeondefenders2.com/showthread.php?62607
- http://forums.dungeondefenders2.com/showthread.php?82923
- I've did a lot of checks in addition to the previous guide http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=273293575

i would say prepare a good dps or at least a character with genie to maximize defenses as in nm defenses deal more dmg and heroes deal less dmg :)
read pew's guide as big head marked it can greatly help you in nm :)
( am not telling u to build the same build be a bit more creative :D unlike some ppl >_< )

tinker's lab DLC (campagin + assault) are not essential but they give you a big shortcut :)

assault : on insane hardcore can reward you with ultimate items or even ulti+ .. though rarely ^^. however most of the weapons from that map are "garbage" compared to the "good" weapons. can be helpful as starter only :) not for a great carry :P .
Further, best accesories are found here on nm (?)
ps: lab assault is quite the easy map .. once u can do it that is :D. since in most cases u wont be killing EVs any way <_<

campagin: in nm gives about 60-68m xp per run ^^ and 25-30m xp on insane .. and i dont need to talk about the blaster rifles (rewarded from wining the map surv/camp) and the chickens (rewarded from survival win)

as for my progression i started playing survivals on insane (magus quartor => ramparts => magus nm) after making each of my character at lvl 74-78 i farmed lab assault for myth gear <_< jumped from average stats of 1000 to 2000 !
for a dps hero the most important is to have high resistance :) as long as u max that it is all good ^^ read pew's guide for best dps hero as well for more info.

lastly, if you want my advice dont rush into nm :) play at least 300-450 hours in insane and try to enjoy the game :).

Nowadays you can just do lab assault hard to get myths, then insane to get trance, and NM content is easy.

The tradtional path is to do insane survivals for myths (or farm the ♥♥♥♥ out of kings game nm),

I just farmed the ♥♥♥♥ out of endless spires first few waves till it gave me what I needed to do the levels themselves, moved onto kings game, then started doing shards cat runs on NM, and netting some trance sup, and it was all rosie from there.

stats? jesus just use bad myth and you reach 4k

what about the shai halud? you can only get it on hard or less, but people are still getting ones with 192+ upgrades and wiping everything out with it. how would you get a good one of those?

Exemplary?
21 campaign maps + 6 shard campaign maps and around 40 challenge maps you can do alone. 70 maps with no telling in which order you can advance through them. And then you get to account for all the permutations with 5 diffuculties, hc, survival and mix mode.
Without the wiki there's also no way to tell what you can expect after spending 2hours. Every map with every settings you choose always has the same rewards so why did nobody at Trendy think about showing the reward in the UI.

You can not see why people starting the game have no clue what the progression is supposed to be? It's obvious you start with the campaign on medium or hard but there's no way to know what you're supposed to do afterwards.

Lab Assault will help you shortcut into getting higher stats quicker and may help out with DPS char control. It won't help you at all in becoming a better builder though. That just requires failing a map over 10+ times, watching where your build fails, watching where ogre/copter/wyvern/djinn/spiders spawn, being a very quick builder, knowing what you're going to build on wave 1 from trial and error with the wave 1 chest mana provided.

I can do normal Lab assault with a little bit of a struggle but im gearing up nicely. Hitting 1k stats is gonna be hard but I can probably do that with upgrades.

It's a game with a ladder, you played now since 2 weeks. Please start at the beginning and do your way from the oldest to the latest maps, not that hard and self-explained.
