Point to note -- MP will only work if you purchase the game on Steam, or activate a "Steam" key for this game.

Back in the day it used to come with 2 ways to play the game on MP -- one via Steam and other via GameSpy.
GameSpy has now ceased to exist/provide services for their platform. So if you somehow get the game but with a non-Steam key, you're stuck and won't be able to play the game with others. Better to make sure you check which platform's keys you're getting if you decide to buy it from outside of Steam.

And the game is still not cross-platform Multiplayer. If you are on Mac/Linux, or want to play with friends who are on Mac/Linux, it is no longer possible to do so.
