a few months now so hoping you have found the answer, but... um have you played the game? Its literally the first thing the tutorial teaches you... you dont move them freely in space per se, you have to tell them what to approach (2nd button with a blue and a red arrow pointing at each other).

Fair enough, hope you can play the game now. It really is, still to this day, one of the best if not THE best space combat game ever in my opinion, just wich they'd been successful in their kickstarter for the sequel :(

one thing you can do is, not to completely destoy disabled ships so you have more options for manouvre

Not sure why no one has mentioned it but if you hold shift a circle will appear around your ship and all other visible objects. Hold left mouse button while holding shift to move the circle further away from your ship in a straight line, release and your ship will fly to the point.

Not very useful but it allows some manual control and positioning.

you can also use the manual move function to drop a nav point that you can use for manuvers.

It's all relative motion.

You only move towards or away from things, which can also include navigation way-points you set around your zone of action. This will allow you to move towards an enemy ship, attack then break off by moving towards another point, or away from original target. The whole time your weapons and ship will function as needed or designated by your command setting: Shielded, Stealth, Aggressive, etc.

Thank you a LOT for this. I am at the mission where you have to manually navigate around enemy turrets, and that is next to impossible with the F2 and F4 commands alone.

So in order to navigate around say, a group of enemy turrets who do you manage nav points?

^ I always did a lot of Zooming way out and rotating the cam around a lot to get a 3D idea of the layout to select my Nav Points. Then I usually put 4-6 Nav Points around the Area of Operation (Level/Map) along the 3 Axis: XYZ's "End-Points" (assuming the level is viewed as a sphere)

These outer edge Nav Points combined with a few additional Nav Points located near Objectives, or whatever you choose, can allow you to move towards targets then retreat or move off in directions away for the main area.

Such as use the upward Y Point to move "Up", Near Z Point to pull back towards your initial start, Right X Point to make any move top the rightward side of your relative position, etc.

Does that make sense? Maybe if I get a little time later I can make a very simple diagram. I personally work far better with visuals than words.

Also: I think Nav Points Self Title: 1,2,3,4, etc as they are placed. So if removed that number is missing in the sequence for the remaninder of the level. Just FYI, because sometimes you get a series of random number after placing and removing a few then it becomes difficult to remember which is relative to what direction of motion without constantly reorienting yourself.

Ships can be moved manually to a point in space by holding the shift key and moving the mouse, this can be used to control the depth of the move function as well.
