Similar Games?
Anyone got a game that is similar to this because this game scratched such a niche game itch that i have never been able to satisfy with any other game

Agreed! Wish the kickstarter for the sequel was successful, though i think this game made such an impact i'm confident there will be a sequel (if only in spirit) someday!

I wish it will be back to its roots as Imperium Galactica instead, it would blow out of the window every 4X out there.

You do realise that the rights to Homeworld was bought from THQ by Gearbox and they have confirmed HD remakes of Homeworld 1, Caticlysm and Homeworld 2 as well as a potential Homeworld 3

Void Destroyer, an early access game on steam now looks rather promising, again Space RTS but as close as we'll get these days to a Nexus like game. Check it out

Sword of the Stars 1 has very nice and deep real-time tactical combat, a very good ship design module with tons of different techs, but it should be noted that the strategical part of the game is on the lighter side (fine by me). Stay away from Sword of the Stars 2 however, it may look prettier but it's a desperately broken product despite tons of patching.

Another suggestion is Starsector (http://fractalsoftworks.com/). It's like a 2D Homeworld meets Mount & Blade, with excellent tactical combat, very good moddability. It's pretty hardcore.

Try the Star Wolves series, they're on Steam. 3rd was the best in my opinion.

Star wolves games are pretty good, play numbers 1 & 3 though, stay away from 2 though it was awful.

There are some decent looking indie 3D space RTS being developed nowadays, check this one for example http://shallow-space.com

Sword of the Stars does not scratch the itch in this particular genre.

Do tell more about star wolves? they have been bundled often but the trash talk about them (or lack of proper descriptive talk) has meant i have skipped them.

The best way I can desribe Star Wolves right now would be to say it's a (sort of) open world Homeworld like game where you control 1 ship and several fighters and wander around doing things.
You don't have giant armies, and you don't mine resources and build fleets. You pick up debris here and there, buy and sell things at stations, recruit a few pilots, upgrade your "carrier" and fighters.
It has a decent story. It could have more side missions, but it does have a few. Decisions you make effect parts of the game. There are also a fair number of AI ships wandering around doing stuff.
I doubt you'd find anyone that says the Star Wolves games are the best out there (maybe the developers and their parents?) but they're decent enough.

I hear plenty of crap about them being bad. but then some say it's good. Metacritic is the first one to fly out the window here.

Generally i have figured out that certain games such as Half-Life has spoiled people in that certain genre and now mediocre FPS games are branded as crap. I have played several lately that have been good. But not nearly good enough to HL of course.

I wish i could find some video that would accurately describe the gameplay.

I found Starwolves interesting for few hours and then it got totally boring as it was always the same

I dont know which version i played, though.

Starwolves 1 and 3 are the best ones, 2 was absolutely awful. Its an RPG in space, you basically command a wing of fighters, you control the load-out and advance the characters skills. I found 1 and 3 to be a challenge and the story is good enough to keep you amused, number 3 is a bit more sandboxy than number 1 in that you get free roam but there isn't much to do in-between missions.

For me personally, I thought they were good games but they stopped short of being great (which is why i'm making my own space RPG/RTS, i've waited long enough) grab them in the sale if you can.

It is seriously annoying how this genre has just been left to wilt and die. Would it have killed them to churn out Homeworld 3? I've managed to knock together the basics for something similar on my own in 6 weeks and i'm no genius (well maybe I am a little hehe.)

SW3 i found to be pretty interesting at first, then as said above with not a lot to do between missions it got quite boring for me, though i do remember it looking quite nice... might see if there are any mods out there for it...
