DirectX9 Crash / CTD Solution
This is a solution, please continue reading.

Right at the end of a mission, on the cut scene, I kept getting a crash to desktop with a directX9 stopped working message. To fix this I ended up replaying the mission PRIOR to the one I was crashing on. Something about the save file I was using to restart the level in which the crash occurred caused it to reoccur every time. After replaying playing through the prior level and creating a new save point I had no more issues and was able to continue on. If you experience a similar error I would suggest trying this solution. The worst that could happen is that you get to blow up even more baddies.

TL;dr Replay the mission prior to the one you crash on and use a new save.

I restarted the campaign 3 times now and it still crashes every single time when the marine reports they found "a huge spaceship" in mission 4. I am at a loss as to what I should do.

Thanks for posting this, SpeakerRob. Apparently something gets corrupt in the save itself, not the core game files necessarily, which explains the endless crash loop if using the same save file over and over again.

@Guidestone, I've encountered the crash you speak of, though only once. Loading a save from earlier in the level, I was able to continue so I can't help except to wish luck. Have you tried forcing DX8, or adjusting graphics settings? Also, I recommend using the new Beta patch released by Nordic Games, as it seems to make Nexus much more playable on modern operating systems.

@DrewUniverse, I'm happy that it was useful information!

@Guidestone, I can think of two possible reasons for your problem.

A) There is something wrong with an asset file related to that level; solution, verify the game cache through Steam and reload any corrupt files (you have to do this twice in a row sometimes).

B) This game is known for level scripting bugs. The crash may be caused by the way in which you are completing a mission prior to this one, or even the order objective completion on the current mission. For example, mission Alpha Gate, if you blow up any one of these ships: the Pathfinder, Starblazer, or Serenity, it can cause the next mission to fail automatically. Because I'm not hip to each one of these possible errors, or what triggeers them, I suggest following this guide.[www.gamefaqs.com]

In my case this ocur because from start of the mission I went to nav point 2. Go to nav point 1 first.
