It's background enough that it is not super annoying and I'm not a fan of techno-type music in general. It's supposed to also give an 8-bit music quality to the game as well, which it does brilliantly.
If you have Windows try Audiosurf for a music program with which you can play your own stuff. Pretty awesome. I think there's a 2nd one coming out soon?
Or even Music Catcher 2 online for something ridiculously simple and yet fun time waster: once you finish the base game in that you can search online for mp3s and play anything you like.
