How do the leaderboards work?

I was just wondering how the leaderboards function in the sense of how do they calculate placement on the board? My gf completed the boss level for zone 1 and she is now appearing with a 1 next to her username, and me in the thousands somewhere with the exact same score. Just wondering if anyone knows, thanks for all the help in advance! ^^
