NOTE! CONTAINS TIPS FOR HOW TO MAKE IT TO WORK!
Myst is a point and click puzzle-game, where you explore the Myst island and four different "Ages", and collect lost pages. To get into these Ages, you need to solve puzzles. To get back to the Myst island, you need to solve puzzles. Graphics are rather old and it shows, but combined with ambient sounds and music, I find the atmosphere quite engrossing regardless.
I've played this game over once, something like twenty years ago (13y old?), using guide in most parts, because by then I simply couldn't understand the clues. Now I think I could
did pass the game without any kind of guide, as I passed one of the Ages all on my own. And I certainly will be playing
did play it through again, I just stopped by to give this positive review, and share some tips regarding how to make it to work properly.
At first play, it worked great. No single crash, voices worked fine, but one thing I noticed: all complex animations were missing, as they're implemented with movies in-place. Eventually I found out how to fix that, a really simple procedure for a game of this age.
Then, some tips'n'hints:
-How to know from start, that movies aint working? If you don't see the demo at the beginning, that's quite clear first indication.
-How to make movies to work? Set compatibility mode to Win 95. This will cause sounds to start distorting, but on other modes, if I got the movies to work, game began crashing (stopped reacting). If this doesn't help, then try if installing Quicktime helps. I'm running Windows 7 and latest Qt.
-On Windows 7, using Win95 compatibility mode with this game also requires to disable themes (from the compatibility settings), if you wish to save or load.
-Do NOT use mouse right button. Game's README says, that this may cause unexpected behavior. You really don't need the mouse right button in this game.
-Do NOT quit the game with Alt+F4 during an animation (movie) that's result from your action, as this may cause the game to close it's UI and get stuck in a loop on the background, leaving screen resolution to something like 640x480 and perhaps a sound looping a second slice. If this happens, you can kill the game-process thru Task Manager.
