Another realMyst on Win 7 64-bit post

Hi everyone,

Just loaded realMyst on my PC. First - simple specs:

Win 7 64-bit
Intel Core i5 2500k
AMD Radeon 6950 1 Gig
Catalyst 11.12 drivers (yeah - I know they're old - it's a long story.)

I have realMyst set to 1920x1080 32 bit resolution and Texture Quality to High

I was having the crash when realMyst would try to play videos. I navigated to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Real Myst directory, and set RealMYST.exe to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" Windows XP (Service Pack 3). That seemed to fix the issues - but I'm still testing it.

So far - so good. I'll post back if I need to tweak anything else.

UPDATE: Well - it seems to be working. I don't want to spoil here, so I can't say exactly where I am, but I've progressed pretty far with no crashes.

Quick tip on aspect ratios: This game - as far as I can tell - is designed around a 4:3 aspect ratio. Using it on a widescreen monitor - like mine which is native 1920x1080 - results in "stretched" graphics. (e.g. circles are ovals).

To fix it, I used 1400x1050 resolution. This isn't perfect, but was the nearest match for my monitor. Also - I put the monitor into "aspect" mode. This is Acer terminology for "don't stretch to fill the screen". This puts the realMyst display in a 4:3 image in the center of my 16:9 monitor and preserves aspect ratio.

Whichever resolution you choose, you'll want to make sure that when you divide the width by the height, you get 1.3333333. (e.g. 1400 / 1050 = 1.3333333)

while trying to get this spectacular game to work i discovered compatibility mode which allows programs to run on an emulated older version of windows ie for riven windows 98 setting it to compatibility mode reduces the amount of crashes and bugs due to incompatible software coding etc its a simple fix that will take less than a minute

step 1 open steam
step 2 right click on myst riven etc
step 3 click on properties
step 4 click on local files tab
step 5 click browse local files
step 6 scroll till you find the game icon that is an application
step 7 right click on the game application
step 8 click on properrties
step 9 click on the compatibility tab
step 10 check the box that says run this program in compatibility mode for
step 11 select what version of windows you would like the game to be emulated in (riven works very well in windows 98/me and myst will work in 95 or 98/me)
step 12 check run program as administrator
step 13 click apply
step 14 click ok
step 15 play game normally and enjoy with a lot less problems
