any army: build 5 worker as fast as you can.
viking, build ice hammers, send 3 out.
aztec, build sun giants, send 2 out
chinese, build wizards, send 3 out
once you get good at surviving, you have to get good at stretching time and saving up gold and mana.
when you get around the hour point the computer starts cheating bad. even if you have a bunch of money and mana saved up it just starts spamming freezes and other spells with no charge time between spells, basically making it impossible. part of the trick of lasting over an hour is leaning how to stretch time in the eariler waves because the later ones get close to impossible.
(like using aztec and trapping the last member of a wave in a cage and not killing him, the computer thinks you're still fighting and will wait a few minutes to send out the next wave. although the farther you get, the shorter the time out between waves becomes)
as for the six hour people, i have to believe they're either hacking or found a glitch. which happened to me once. the computer stopped sending troops. i waited about 15 minutes then turned it off... i immediately thought "jesus.. why did i do that? i could have had the stop spot!"
but, who knows? im just as curious as you as to how they do it. if it's fair, i'd love to hear their strategies.
