Solution: Failed to find steam
When installing allow a desktop icon to be placed on your desktop. You may as well allow a start icon as well, that way if you accidentally erase the icon you can create a shortcut to the desktop from the start menu.

Make sure steam is NOT running. If steam is running shut it down and wait 10 seconds or so.

Start the game using the desktop icon. Let steam start up automatically and then the game will start after that.

Got this from another forum so I can't take credit for finding the solution.

My thanks goes to furiousfunk for providing the answer.

I'm running 64 bit Win 7, Radeon 6950's in crossfire and have no problem running the game at 1920 X 1080.

Just playing the tutorial now.

Hey, it actually worked! Seems like I don't have to resolve to those patches in order to get it to work. Thanks for the heads up. Seems like those older forums still come to some great use. :)

Not only that - now I can actually load the game up even after starting up Steam itself.

Thanks for the heads up. :) I'll give it a go next time I try to play.

It does sound like the game can now find steam. You do see steam start up right? And then you get the white screen and then the error? If you see steam starting then your issue is not "failed to find steam".

Have you tried google "ghost has stopped working" ?

No problem. Sorry no. I googled it and didn't find any solution to it. What OS are you running? Did you verify the game cache?

Did it. It says "Problem checking Steam application."

I saw what laughingoctopus saw. The desktop shortcut doesn't work for me ('failed to find Steam') so when I move the .dll over to that folder I get the same message as them. What's crazy is that this game ran fine the first time I played it and it did not prompt me with the User Account Control prompt of 'Allow this program to make changes to your computer?', first time I just double clicked and it started up. Now every time it asks me I want to allow it to make changes, which I'm wondering if this extra security step is complicating things as the only time it's run properly is when that message didn't come up. Would love to see a workaround for that.

This worked for me as well. Got this when it first came out, even had the preorder, but have been unable to get the Steam version to work.
