Potal 2 Crashing at loading screen
I've had portal since quite some time, probably about half a year. I recently wanted to play co op, since a friend bought the game, so when I tried to start portal, steam told me it had to update the game files to a more efficient format. I think it said that one file failed, but I'm not so sure anymore. Now everytime I go into portal 2, and try to start a singleplayer or multiplayer game, the game crashes at the loading screen and my mac goes back to the desktop.

I have a macbook pro version 10.7.5, does anyone have the same problem or know how I can fix this?

I was in almost the exact same situation. Hadnt played portal 2 for about 8 months and had to update my files when I tried to play it today. After updating the game it crashed on the loading screen for me. I tried everything to fix it. What finally did work was Verifying the Integrity of Tools Cache for the Portal 2 Authoring Tools - Beta. I have no idea why this fixed the problem, or if it will work for you, but I thought I would post what fixed this issue for me.

This happened to me just now. I had actually been playing recently. I found the option to verify the cache and it downloaded the file and that corrected the issue. To verify the cache, right click on the game's entry in your Library, click on the Local Files tab and there is a Verify Integrity of Game Cache button that screen.

This happened to me a week or two ago... I had been playing Portal 2 Co-op with my friend on a couple of occasions, so I know the game was working. Suddenly, one day I went to play Co-op and it crashed on the loading screen every time, whether I try to play co-op or single player. I also tried verifying the integrity of the game cache and it didn't help me. I even tried deleting and re-downloading all of the local files, and that didn't help either. I am running OS X 10.7.5 on a MacBook Pro 15-inch late 2011.

Happened to me about an hr ago. Would crash trying to start any game mode. Verified the game integrity, downloaded a few MBs and it fixed my problem.

I have a similar problem, but my Portal 2 won't even get to the loading screen when I start it. portal2.exe runs for about 2 seconds in the Task Manager and then immediately quits with no errors or other messages. It's super frustrating and I've verified the cache files multiple times and have even completely removed the game and re-downloaded it. Also, I don't have the Authoring Tools installed and never have. I only have Portal 2 installed. Anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Valve CS doesn't seem to be any help since my ticket has been open for two weeks with no acknowledgment from them.

Same problem here, and no response from Valve (or anyone) on my ticket. :-/ Same OS (OSX 10.7.5) as a few of the other people who're experiencing this problem too, I think.

For what it's worth, here's a transcript of the error message I get: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2943102/p2crash.txt

ok i found a way.
for my fellow mac users, i was able to solve my problem by installing windows 7 on my macbook pro and running portal 2 on windows. i installed windows using parallels desktop, how exactly i did it is too complicated to write here, but if anyone wants to do the same i can try to get a good tutorial for you. i know this won't be of much use to you, but i thought i'd mention it.

I got this response today from Steam staff. Currently trying it, will report back:

***

Please try the following:

Exit Steam entirely.

Open Finder and navigate to the folder containing your SteamApps folder (/Users/[username]/Library/Application Support/Steam/)

Rename the "SteamApps" folder to "SteamApps_old".

Re-launch Steam and re-install the game.

Once the installation is complete, test the issue.

Note: If you are using Lion please do the following to enable your Library folder:

1. Open Terminal
2. Type chflags nohidden ~/Library
3. Close Terminal

You should see the Library folder available through the Go menu on the menu bar while holding the option key.

If this resolves the issue, you may copy the new files into the "SteamApps_old" folder and rename it to "SteamApps" to restore your other games without re-downloading.

If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games.

Thanks for the post, schwabby! Renaming that folder and re-installing fixed my Portal 2 issues, it runs fine now.

I have the same problem except when it starts to loop the sound, it will flash for a second, like my screen is turning on and off, then it will come up with a little message saying my "driver has stopped and successfully recovered" (i have a PC and its kinda old so that might be the problem because i've tryed everything on here)

I had the same problem and just recently found a very simple fix,
Locate Portal 2 in your steam library, right click and hit "Properties", navigate to the "Local Files" tab and select "Verify Integrity Of Game Cache". This should take a few minutes and once its done re launch portal 2. It will update for a minute or two then it should work.
