Game starts but no video

I'm trying to run this game, Portal 2, but it won't show me any video. I have a video card within specs but I'm worried my monitor won't display the resolution it is trying to run in. Is there any way to change the resolution, or start the game in windowed mode instead of full screen mode so I can try and get it to work?

I have an ATI Radeon HD 4200 (I think). Something like that.

Solved - video card was not the issue - it was able to display (in a higher resolution) in windowed mode, and then I was able to change the resolution settings and flip it to full screen mode from inside the game - settings are now saved and hopefully this won't be a problem anymore. Thanks for reading, hopefully nobody else has as crummy a monitor as I do that can only display 1080x720 or whatever it is.
