Steam crashes Portal 2! (CTD)
Hi,

I'm trying to run Portal 2 on a Windows XP pc but it keeps crashing to desktop. I tried running the game in offline mode and the game works that way.

As soon as I go to online mode Portal 2 won't work anymore.

Stuff I tried:

-Updating C++
-Updating DirectX
-Updating Videocard drivers
-Tested hardware (memory/HDD)
-Verified integrity of files
-Removed the game and redownloaded the whole game
-Removed Steam+games and redownload the whole game
-Tried beta of Steam

It seems that Steam is crashing the game somehow. Any thoughts?

Same problem here, although I only tried about half of what you did.

Just the same problem. P2 crashes to desktop every time I try to run showing the head with valve and then title screen.
W7x64. All drivers are up to date. Tried to reinstall the entire game, disable anti-virus and firewall. Nothing helps.
The game worked properly about one year ago on the same system.

I found a thread earlier that fixed it for me, but I can't find it now. go to start- run- and type in msconfig. Make sure selective startup, load system services, and load startup items are all checked. Then go to Services, make sure all Microsoft services are hidden, and then click disable all. (I had to reenable some, and apparently a lot of pl claim that it's the amd external events utility that causes this.) Reboot and then see if you're good to go.

I'm suffering the same problem you did. On seeing one man trying to enter one portal, I see meadow... And I scream, '♥♥♥♥!

I tried this earlier but it didn't change anything for me. It seems there is a bug in Steam (DRM-part?) that causes the crash. As soon as you go online with the steam client Portal 2 crashes. Offline mode (which is single player only) works perfect!

I get the crash on start up bug too, Portal 2 keeps saying my video card drivers are out dated when they are up to date and it also says that there is a file missing and downloads it, but still the game crashes to desktop once the load screen comes up.

how i sorta fixed the graphic driver crash on start up glitch is by either running the game in compatibility mode for Windows 7 for one time and the next time i want to play, i turn it off... a bit of a drag but makes Portal2 work for me both online and offline.

i have an up to date graphic driver and god knows i did all i could think of in order to make the game not crash for either offline or online. the main issue i get though, is when i use the shortcut key to close the game, i have to go turn off or on the compatibility mode before i can play again. gonna see if i have to do the change before running Portal2 again.

EDIT: leaving the game normaly doesn't require a change in compatibility, currently in Windows 7 compatibility mode although its not required for offline play. online play works fine as well in either compatibility mode or not.

I tried setting Portal 2 into Windows 7 compatibility mode and it still crashes on start up, even setting it with run as admin still fails. I don't want to have to do a full reinstall and run the risk of losing the save files, but the Steam backup feature also doesn't work since it says a file is missing, then downloads it and again nothing.

I don't think it has anything to do with Windows 7, I have the same problem on a Windows XP machine. Portal 2 is making Steam crash somehow and Valve doesn't want to respond in anyway. I have been busy with their support for over 2 weeks with all kinds of standard solution bs with no progress. They refuse to do anything.

Crashing here too after the stratup videos. The thing is, it worked pefectly fine just two days ago!!? O_o

I haven't updated any drivers or anything like that. All my other Source games work just fine.

Edit: For some reason verifying cache files didn't work, but I got it working after I reinstalled the game.

I have the same problem. Just the rotating circle, then nothing. Reinstalling doesn't help at all and takes hours. I think one of the updates is what's causing the problem and for some reason it won't let me opt out of updating during or immediately after reinstalling. I don't CARE about them getting multiple screens going, I want the main program to work like I paid for it to.

I have the problem solved:

1. Completely logout Steam.
2. Then start Steam as Administrator.
3. Check/fix cache.
