Portal 2
Possible Portal 2 launch fix.
*(This fix is for those people whose game won't launch after the steam is launching program window)*
Turns out there were two programs interfering with Portal 2 when I tried to launch. For me it was Norton antivirus (which I thought was deleted off my pc) and the AMD Utility manager. After you do the steps below make sure to run Portal 2. If it launches then a program is interfering with it. I'm going to post a related article and the list of programs known to interfere with Steam as well.

Click the Start button, then "Run" (or Windows key + R)

Type in:

msconfig

Choose "Selective Startup"

Uncheck the box labeled "Load Startup Items".

Now, click on the "Services" tab.

Please make sure the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box *is* checked.

Then, click "Disable All".

If you are using Vista or Windows 7, please re-check the "Steam Client Service" as this is required for Steam to function on these operating systems.

Click "OK" and allow your computer to restart.

Test the issue and let us know the results. This is for diagnostic purposes only. You should not leave your computer in this state, but it may help us determine the cause of the issue.

To set the system back to normal, launch msconfig again and choose "normal startup", close the window and restart your computer.

This did not solve my issue.

OS: Win7 SP1
Processor: AMD Athlon II X4 630
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 4200 (Integrated)

I did not have Norton installed, but I thought it might have been AMD Utility Manager. However it did not change my issue at all: I start up Portal, the Valve splash comes up, then a loading screen, and the game closes down with no error message and no side effects.
Oh your's is a completely different issue. Mine is for those people who can't even get the game to launch at all.
everybody THIS DOES WORK i just tried it and it works after disableing all programs besides steam enabled your graphics card and any other program and it works
thanks Arathemis
Make sure to actually nail down which program it is. The support staff told me it's not safe to leave your computer with it all disabled.
the program i disable that was conflicting was AMD External Events Utility AMD FUEL Service AMD RAIDXpert
everything still works
Sweet. I figured it was time somebody actually posted a solution once they had it instead of leaving everyone else hanging.
okay update! after disableing some things listed above portal 2 wont work after today
Same here had to go back and disable another process
defrag the game files see if that works

that's a different issue, to fix it:
just reinstall the game, if it doesn't work then reinstall steam, i had that issue at one of the first times my portal 2 updated, i didn't know i can uninstall a steam game without uninstalling steam, so i reinstalled steam, due to that i don't know if reinstalling the game itself(the "delete local content" doesn't remove all files, so some of them are only installed the first time you install the game on your current steam installation) fixes the problem
