Portal 2 black screen after loading
I just got Portal 2 a few days ago and am really excited to play it. Unfortunately, I have encountered an issue that many people seem to have, but few have solved. After loading Portal 2, my computer shows just a black screen, but I can hear the noises. One solution to the issue that I found was to enable the developer console and type this in: "mat_postprocess_enable 0" This worked to some degree, but the image is flickery and laggy. I noticed in the developer console, it says in red lettering, "***** Trying to get a pixel shader that failed loading!" I have done some research on this issue, but come up blank. I would like to tackle the problem of this error specifically, and avoid simply getting a new graphics card if possible. Thanks!

have you tried updating youre graphics driver? the "Shader" is a part of the graphics driver that smooths out rendering

I have a way that works every time (though it's a bit tedious).

1. Right-click Portal 2, then click Properties.
2. Click Local Files (the middle tab), then Browse Local Files
3. Right-click Portal 2 Application, then properties (note: you must right-click the words "Portal 2" or you'll get the wrong menu).
4. In the Properties tab, click Compatability (2nd to left tab)
5. Check "Run this program in compatability mode", then select "Windows 7" in the drop-down menu.
6. Play the game

And after you quit the game & decide you want to play again:

7. Repeat steps 1 - 5
8. For "Run this program in compatability mode for:", change it to "Windows Server 2003 (Service Pack 1)"
9. Play the game.

And the next time you decide to play again:

10. Repeat steps 1 - 6

And the cycle repeats... It's annoying, but it works.

I have tried that, but for me it does nothing. I am using windows 8, and when I do that, when I hover over the portal 2 icon, it shows that it's showing, but then I hover over the box, it's 4x the size of my screen, and when I click it, it is still blank, but I can hear everything and click on stuff, I just dont know what I am clicking on

2017. I have the same problem.

Valve, can you fix your games? Because I've payed Portal 2 with my money, and I can't play it.

Actually, for some reason, it seems to work on my laptop that is worse than my desktop, and it runs perfectly. I'm not sure what caused it to work, but it did, so I'm not sure

It didnt work on windows 7 for me,
So what I did was put it on Windows XP Service Pack 3
And it works,
Also I dont have to do any more steps after I have done that
Hello guys there is a fix
Now try this
as BozdoGana said
1. Right-click Portal 2, then click Properties.
2. Click Local Files (the middle tab), then Browse Local Files
3. Right-click Portal 2 Application, then properties (note: you must right-click the words "Portal 2" or you'll get the wrong menu).
But go to the
Options
where you can select
8 bit
16 bit picture
then run as administrator and so on
play with these
then you will open the game and in the game go to options and select the game not to be played in full screen and select smaller screen resolution.
At least the game runs very smooth on a smaller screen.my computer monitor says input not supported but once I selected in the game options smaller screen everything went smooth but on a smaller screen.

Most old games (including Portal 2) may run better in older hardware. Why? It's because the game asks for something like: Display this frame! And the graphics card sends it very fastly and then the game doesn't know if it did it or not so it just.. dies. Expect for older hardware, it's usually more slow, so then the game knows when that frame is rendered.

I have a way to fix it. It's kinda tedious, but it's better than nothing.
1. Go to Steam, right-click on Portal 2 and go to "Properties".
2. Go to "Files" and select "Browse Local Files".
Similar Route: Right-click on Portal to and select "Browse Local Files".
3. Completely delete the Portal 2 file (don't worry, it'll still be in your Steam library).
4. Right-Click on Portal 2 again and click "Uninstall".
5. Once uninstalled, install Portal 2 again.
6. If you quit and want to play again, repeat 1-5.
7. Have fun!
(Note: Just uninstalling without deleting the Portal 2 file won't work)
