ty, but

Can't use cheat command stopsound in multiplayer, unless the server has sv_cheats set to 1.

it can be done for sp maps, or coop if your the host, or the host enables cheats first
Have you tried, say, going into the game options, clicking audio, and turning off music volume?

I love to play community test chambers with the BIT.TRIP RUNNER Soundtrack in the background, so I also needed to figure this out

Hit the key for the console during the level. Press Enter after each line:
snd_musicvolume 0.00 stopsound stopsoundscape
(maybe 0.00 is important, not 0, not 0.0, but 0.00 :steamhappy: Suddenly it worked for me)


Return to game. If that is *not* working type sv_cheats 1 first before the other two commands.

If you want to put in autoexec.cfg format setup that would be
snd_musicvolume "0.00"

and so on. But I don't know how "stopsoundscape" is working with it.


PS: Yes, game sounds and silent ambient background are still working with this!

PPS: This needs to be re-done every level/chamber. But we can make a shortcut:
bind "m" "exec mutemusic.cfg"

Where you put the above into a file named "mutemusic.cfg" into folder:
C:\Program(...)\Steam\steamapps\common\Portal\ 2\portal2\cfg

And when you press m you should have that effect. But test it before manually in the in-game console.

You can adjust (some?) sound effects via:
snd_mixer_master_level 0.75
Default value 1.00 (mine is just an example)

You can edjust the overall volume of the game by (example):
volume 0.70

i've done that and music was still playing, just quieter
The music volume setting only works if the ambient_generic is using its proper soundscript for that theme. It's on the mapper.
