I might try the hack and report back, but it just seems like a glaring oversight...
I'll add my experiences to that thread over there to clear up some things, because everything can be solved (even playing coop workshop maps, I figured that out yesterday night!), though information is scared around, you need to put them all together.
Then all you need to do is open up the console '~' key and type: >joy_remap_player_for_controller1 2
>hit enter
>go to co op screen and press x on the controller (Square on PS3 controller)
and you will go into co-op.
all joy_remap_player_for_controller1 2 does is remap the controller number from player 1 to player 2
how do i un do it so i can play with online friends it wont let me

I HOPE YOU CAN DO IT COZ IT'S EASY LIKE THAT, REPLY ME IF IT DOESN'T WORK AND I'LL TRY TO REMEMBER IF I GAVE DONE SOMETHING EARLIER I FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS SOLUTION, COZ I'VE BEEN 4 HOURS TRYING MAYBE I DID SOMETHING BEFORE BUT I DON'T THINK SO, GOOD LUCK BYE
Check your bindings on your controller. Most probably your X button is bound to something other than what you want. Try pressing different buttons in the menu.
I don't know what kind of native support that controller has, if any.
