Portal 2 Crashing During Gameplay With No Error

I bought Portal 2 during the Autumn Sale last week. I've been playing since Monday, but only at about 10-20 minutes at a time before it crashes to desktop without warning or error message. I've searched through these forums and it seems like people are having this problem and similar problems, but none of the solutions are working for me.

None of my other Steam games exhibit this behavior. Every time this happens I verify local game files, it says to has to reacquire one or two files, it "finishes the installation process," and then I am able to play for another 10-20 minutes before it happens all over again.

The only "Tools" I have installed are SDK Bases 2006 and 2007, and I also verified those to no avail.

Luckily I am able to reach a few checkpoints before a crash so I can actually advance through the game, but this is getting ridiculous. I've logged about 3 hours of total playtime and have over a dozen crashes.

My computer is only 4 months old so I don't really think that is the problem, but since I know people will ask, here are my system specs:

Intel Core i5 3750k
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670
16 GB of RAM
Gigabyte Z77X-UD5H Motherboard

I have the same problem. my portal 2 crashes while I'm playing coop.
I bought the game 1 week ago..

I5-2500K
Intel HD Graphics 3000 ("~graphics card~")

I'm having this problem right now! I'm trying to find the HL3 easter egg but whenever I start up Portal 2 and continue game and it gets stuck on the BG screen. It also crashes to desktop when I pick a new game. I bought the game in april 2012.

I have exactly the same problem. Portal 2 crashes to desktop and steam freezes until I close it from task manager. I'm writing this to keep this thread updated. Hopefully steam will make a statement about it. The problem can't be on client side when it's experienced by multiply gamers at the same time.

Most of the time I get no error, but when I do get an error, I get the top one I have listed, followed by this one.

Also I have tried playing on different video settings (I feel like that GTX 670 should allow me to play maxed, though).

I'm bumping this because I've had the same problem since around September 2012. My computer ran the game completely fine up to that point, when after an update around that time it suddenly started crashing randomly. The same things with verifying the cache, having to reacquire 1 or 2 files and then starting it up and crashing again and having to reacquire the same 1 or 2 files has been happening ever since then.

I dunno if this is the same as in the OP's case, but when this issue happens to me it crashes Steam entirely, not just Portal 2. The other difference is that I make it 5 minutes tops before crashing, rather than 10-20. I've asked Steam Support for some help on the matter but they were completely unhelpful--I described the issue clearly in my email and said I had tried reinstalling and verifying the game cache, and over the course of several emails they merely asked me to do those two things before giving me a non-answer along the lines of "the game doesn't meet your computer's specs".

I've even lowered the game to its lowest settings and still experience the issue, bafflingly.
