why does it bother you average joe windows users that we dont like your os? I have a windows computer and I ♥♥♥♥ing hate using it thats why its hard. You guys must not do much more than use microsoft office and look at porn. How do you live without a bash shell and a *nix environment? Do you download putty to connect to your servers all the time? Its incredibly nice to be able to use the same operating system across all of my servers, projects, devices, whether its my laptop, my raspberry pi or my 30 servers running on my virtual cluster.

Actually, it's hard to buy a computer without Windows. Try it sometime. I mean, without buying from Apple, instead. A regular PC, without Windows. It's hard.

Usually you end up buying a computer with Windows pre-installed. Then it takes quite a bit of work to eradicate every trace of it, especially on newer installs where you need to change BIOS settings to allow different operating systems to install.

It's not that we can't use Windows. Of course we can. We just choose not to, because we feel other operating systems are a better fit for us. To each their own, right? All operating systems have advantages and disadvantages.

Oh, and in response to your last statement "Almost all the games are made for almost all versions of Windows". This is simply untrue. Most older games run only on older versions than XP, most newer games run only on XP and up. You may be too young too know this, but there were Windows versions before XP came out, too. In fact, most of the older games that don't run on newer Windows versions run just fine (or better) on Linux. Just saying...

EDIT: To stay on topic, here's something actually relevant to the discussion:
I'd guess Portal 2 will be available for Linux by the time the Steamboxes ship to testers. Surely Portal 2 won't be missing from the line-up of native games on them, right...? Oh, and I noticed today that "This game is not available for your platform." disappeared from Portal 2's page on my Linux install. It still won't let me install the game, but that's some progress, right? :-)

When you're all done arguing over your operating systems...

Portal 2 is currently made for Windows and Mac. Knowing Valve like Linux I'd imagine a Linux port will come out in the future.

And personally I don't mind Linux, but so much more stuff is made to work with Windows and such, its not even that bad provided you have it set up correctly.

Well, I have Linux and Steam. And I bought both Portal 1 and 2. Portal 1 runs on Linux. Why should Portal 2 not run? Many Valve blockbuster titles also run on Linux. I want it for Linux! At Christmas at latest ... ;-)

And by the way: when the Steam boxes come out, you WIndows users will be busted! Because then, Valve is developing first for it's Steam OS - which is Linux! - and then for WIndows (if at all) ... :-D

It will come, just a matter of time. Valve, as you said, has been hard at work porting all their titles.

If I had to guess, they're probably having trouble getting their level editor to work under Linux. Last time I checked, that part had trouble even through wine... I'm sure they're motivated to get it working as soon as they can, though.

This video has Valve playing Portal2 with a steam controller, presumably on SteamOS (a linux distro), so it's just a matter of time.

Agree. Valve is way into Linux. You can already get the original Portal game, the TeamFortress games, Left4Dead 2 and ALL the Halflife games. Time will tell :3
