It works, but only if you turn on cheats. It's not real 3 player, its more like two players and a bot that you control. This is the closest thing to 3 player coop you will get without having to run modified clients or dlls

In all honesty, I don't think that making a 3rd player necessary to the completion of a chamber would be worth the time of valve or mappers. Besides, there is no current team working on portal2.
