Linux crashes on 7870
I'm trying to run the Linux beta on a Radeon 7870. The game appears to start fine, but when I try to actually play, it loads and crashes just as it finishes loading the level.

Is anyone else having issues like these?
Does anyone else have it working on a 78xx card?

Edit: I am using the Catalyst 14.1 drivers and all my other games are working.

For me too with a 7950, it seems it's a known issue with catalyst drivers https://github.com/ValveSoftware/portal2/issues/4

Okay, thanks. I went ahead and installed the open source drivers, but it's still not quite playable. Although it does not crash with the open source drivers, the performance is so bad that it's not worth trying to play. I'm guessing that beta bugs are to blame, as my other games are playable with the open source drivers.

It's crashing for me with nvidia 650, right after the first level, i get in the lift and the game crashes.

That's a different problem. This thread is about AMD cards crashing before any actual gameplay has occurred.

I have the same problem with radeon 7770. Game crashes after I finish a level in campaign

+1. I'm running on Ubuntu 14.04 x64, AMD A8-3500M/Radeon 6620G. It's playable on r600g, but slower than Catalyst. Installed Catalyst and now it runs very fast, but crashes every other time a new level finishes loading.

Other people have posted unrelated things in this thread, but I want to add that the problem that I described in my original post still happens with the Catalyst 14.2 driver. (In addition to Catalyst 14.1)

That is, I only ever get as far as the loading screen. It crashes while it is about to finish loading.

I'm not sure how to phrase this more clearly, but if you are able to play even part of one level on your setup, then you have a different problem. Please post that somewhere else.

I repeat, this thread is for AMD cards only, and it is for discussing a problem that prevents ANY levels AT ALL from loading. Not just some particular level, but ANY level, even once. It won't even display one frame of one level before crashing. The last thing I see is the last loading dot about to turn blue, and it crashes back to steam.

If you have information about that problem, please share it here. Otherwise please start your own thread.

Newest update let's me play Portal 2 without a crash (HD 7870). But I have this sound/voice issue.

I had the same issue with a Radeon HD 7950 and Catalyst 14.2. The game update from an hour ago seems to have resolved the issue, and I was able to play 7 stages so far without problems.

For the open-source drivers to work usefully on radeonsi (most HD7xxx and – I think – all later cards & APUs), you need Linux 3.13 and recent Mesa – not sure if 10.0 is sufficient, but 10.1 will be.

I find that this game works fine with Linux 3.12 and Mesa 10.x driving an HD6770.

Yes! It's working now with the latest updates. 7950 and catalyst 14.2 beta
