Portal 2 Keeps Crashing
Hi everyone,

I have been unable to play Portal 2 for the past few days. Prior to this, it has worked perfectly. I'm on a 2009 iMac running OSX 10.6.8.

This is what I sent to Steam Support (haven't heard from them in days and I am really desperate to play my game).

I have played Portal 2 many, many times without any problems. Recently, when I tried to launch Portal 2, it says "preparing to launch," the Portal 2 icon briefly appears in my Finder Dock, and then it closes and never opens. My friends see my status as "Playing Portal 2" for a second before going back to me just being "Online." The game completely does not open at all. I am totally unable to play my game. I don't know why this is happening. I haven't changed my OS, graphics card, sound cards, or any kind of hardware associated with my machine.

I did download a DLC called "Thinking With Time Machine" but I never played it, not even once. I uninstalled it anyways. I tried verifying files, deleting the game and reinstalling it (three times), deleting all files associated with Portal 2, restarting Steam, and restarting my computer. The problem remains the same. Sometimes I get an error about my local files being different than my cloud files, but that's only after I tried manually deleting/moving Portal 2 files.

I was going to try completely uninstalling Steam AND Portal 2, but I'm afraid that I'll end up being unable to play ANY of my games.

I also followed Steam's advice to "...restart your computer and then refresh your Steam files....Once completed, please verify the game's files." Didn't change a single thing.

Anyone have any ideas?

(Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong place; I don't frequent the Steam forums.)

it keeps crashing at startup, or with the stupid turrets? For me, the crashes are triggered by the turrets. I'm stuck in chapter 8 :(

Defintitely at startup, though I've heard of people having problems with turrets in different threads. Please fix this, Valve!!

I'm currently in ths same situation as you. I'm on a mac and the game won't open at start up.

I've been back and forth with Steam Support and NOTHING has worked. Honestly, I think it just stopped working after the update. I would like to go back to an older version of Portal 2 or have another update that fixes this issue. Getting really frusturated.

So I just tried launching it and it opened with no problems. I have NO IDEA what caused this -- maybe Valve released an update? Definitely not something on my end.

Weird I'm using Mavericks 10.9.2 and the game works fine for me. :L

I'm on Snow Leopard but I haven't had problems in the past...

Yep, I am definitely thrilled! Guess you don't realize how good something is until it's gone. :)

Gonna leave this thread open though for others who might still have this problem.

I don't see how you solved the issue, I am struggling for days now to find a solution to this issue, Valve/Steam has not bother to contact me

Tried submitting a ticket to steam support got nothing but the message "here is a community that may be able to help" and it brought me to this discussion area, which so far is not a human being telling me how to fix my problem

well no because I deleted all local data because that was one of the suggestions. I don't even get the menu screen

My game crashes at the loading screen right before the main menu. What is the cause and are there any work-arounds?

Same problem here, I see a couple of graphic loading screen, and crash!
Never arrived at the first menu.
iMac 24" 2008, core duo 3.06 GHz, 4 GB RAM - OSX El Capitan
Maybe too little RAM (My machine doesn't allow more)?
