why do most people start with portal 2 and not the first one?

I know, both portals are really addicting, but most people i talk to have never played the first one, if you do that, you will get comfused. EX: whos GLaDOS? i murdered her? i blew up a laboratory? i threw her cores down an incinerator? etc.

Maybie because the first ever Half-Life came out in 1998? Along with that HL2 came out in 2005, Episode one came out a year later, Episode two a year after that and Half-Life 2: Portal one day before HL2EP2.

personally whenever possible I always try to start with the first of any series, be it games, tv show seasons, movies, books, etc. but many people prefer to jump straight into the newest, expecting it to be the best (especially in games where graphics, gameplay and such will often drastically improve between instalments). there's no right or wrong way of doing it, although to those who do prefer to go straight for the newest I'd always recomend at least reading a summary of the plot of the earlier ones

I would say because Portal was never advertised. When most people see a commercial for a new game, they hardly ever go back and play the others because they are outdated, so I agree with vioray about that.

Technecally most of the Half-Life games had co-op, you just had to mod it in.

My personal reason for why I started with Portal2 was because I couldn't find a store that still sold the original game. I guess this goes hand-in-hand with the lack of advertisement and also the fact that its an outdated game that most stores dont keep in stock anymore.

I may be wrong but I think Portal 1 was only available in stores as part of a collection with Half Life. it can be bought (very cheaply) from Steam though

vioray is correct, with the fact that you could buy it very cheaply from the Steam store.
In fact, if you look at stores that DO sell the original Portal, it's about twice as much as it is on Steam.
I've looked on Amazon and other websites, the original Portal is almost/is the price of Portal 2 on Steam.
