i cant see the area of effect of my attacks before casting them
i used to play this game back in the day and i remember this was a feature, you could see the area your attack was going to hit, which was super useful for attacks such as fire breath, i just got the game on the humble bundle but this feature is missing, any way to fix that?

I noticed this as well. Wizard's Throne it works fine, but not in Shadow Magic. I clearly remember it working in GoG's release of Shadow Magic, but I launched theirs just now to confirm this and it doesn't work there either. If anyone's got some insight to why this may be happening I'm all ears. I tried Compatability Mode and it didn't change anything.

Enabling Direct 3D crashes AoW for me so I can't see if that fixes it. The 'AoE Targeting' works just fine for global spells like Divine Storm though, just not for in-combat abilities...

Try launching the game from AoWSM.exe locaed in your Steam folder. This solved the area of effect radius for me as well as screen flickers, zoom not functioning and corrupt files.

Tried that just now, and there wasn't any change for me. I guess it's something with my laptop then... AoW and Wizard's Throne both have the screen flickering for me, Wizard's Throne has the AoE Radius, and none of them can zoom in or out.

Have you tried "verify Integrity of game cache" by right clicking the game in steam and selecting properties? Mine came back with one corrupt file before I got it to work properly. I have Direct3D disabled in AOW configuration as well. Perhaps verify integrity and disable the Direct3D thingee and run from AoWSM.exe in game folder would work. Zoom is semi-useful but the AoE and range indicators are pretty important.

Just tried that and it informed me about four files being misplaced or such. I launched the game again afterwards from the directory itself and Zoom/range still don't function.

The Steam overlay and screenshots don't work in any of the AoW games for me, but I'm not sure if that's related in any way.

Very strange, but I can't check to see if it works on my desktop until this weekend. I haven't installed Steam's release of Shadow Magic on it yet since GoG's runs perfectly fine, whereas on my laptop Steam's release is far more stable (Hasn't crashed once, and doesn't need to be run in Windowed mode)

Thanks for all the help though! :)

I ran the game configuration through Steam yesterday and the file became corrupt again. All the problems manifested even when launching game from AoWSM.exe. hmmm.
I validated integrity and it replaced files and now it works perfectly from AoWSM.exe in the Steam folder.
Try a clean install and then make sure to not do anything through a Steam menu and see if it runs properly directly from AoWSM.exe.

Update: It's been a few days of playing the game with no problems through AoWSM.exe in my Steam install directory, "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Age of Wonders Shadow Magic\AoWSM.exe".
I have Win XP SP3.
If I run the game or the configuration utility from Steam it corrupts a file causing screen flicker, no zoom function, no ranged or area of effect indicators, keyboard shortcuts not working, and program not closing properly on exit. If you have these issues try re-downloading the game or verifying the integrity and do not launch the game, configuration utility or compatability mode from Steam. Find AoWSM.exe in the game's install directory and use that to run the game. There is the configuration utility in that folder, also, but I haven't tried it out.
